Therapists for college students near New York University
I'm a clinical psychologist and a trained psychoanalyst. I believe that what promotes growth and mental health is the process of putting real but hard to see aspects of your experience into words. This decreases their power and brings them more to heel for you. This is different from challenging thoughts or skill building. You as the patient should have clear evidence in therapy that you're coming to understand yourself better and more fully. Old, stuck ways of thinking should slowly give way to the ability to think more effectively about what is and what can be. Your sense of 'you' should grow wider and more secure, and your ability live and act with purpose of your choosing should slowly build.
Clients who seek my practice include those experiencing range of emotional distress or confusion, seeking clarity and balance in their life. In a compassionate and creative approach utilizing mindfulness, body-mind connection and tools from art therapy practice we work together to unlock your inner strength, wisdom and ability to move forward in a secure and confident manner. Long or short term therapy available, person-based.
Many of us feel disconnected, carry burdens from past traumas, and struggle to balance caring for ourselves with having a fulfilling life. My approach will help you respond to intense emotions and memories with more curiosity and speak to the parts of you that feel self-critical, alienated, and alone with a more compassionate and nurturing voice. We will explore your unmet needs and help you express yourself with more vulnerability, confidence, and authenticity. My focus is offering Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy to the LGBT/queer community and ADHD/neurodivergent folks. My special interests are spirituality, social anxiety, non-monogamy, co-dependence, intergenerational trauma, college life, and plant medicine/psychedelic integration. I am Level 2 trained in IFS therapy through the IFS Institute, and can also be found in their practitioner directory. I also offer ADHD evaluations - you can find an inquiry form on my website.
I am licensed in New York with 10 years of professional work experience. I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, relationship issues, & depression. I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. Taking the first step to sign up for therapy can take courage and I am proud of you for getting started! I use a mixture of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based CBT, Narrative Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Strengths-Based Perspective to assist the client depending on their goals. In your first session, we'll explore what brought you to therapy and then decide the most appropriate ways to help you make progress.
Life can have its challenging moments, especially during this time of uncertainty and quick changes. Throughout our life we develop methods of coping that, at one time, perhaps helped us to survive, but now prevent us from ultimately thriving. This can manifest in our relationship patterns and our mood which can cause disruption in work, love, family, friendships and a healthy identity. I am here to help support you through these changes as well find new ways to create balance and better manage the stressors influencing your daily life. Whether you are struggling with depression, anxiety, life changes, or processing this past year, I am here to listen. While I am licensed as an art psychotherapist, creating art during session is not required.

Please feel free to check out my Introduction Video at https://youtu.be/ytYmG-2v4c4 to learn more about me as practitioner and person. Clients often come to therapy, initially, with symptoms of anxiety, significant stress, exhaustion, depression, anger, etc. I am here to listen while the Client talks through current and past issues that have led to the onset of these symptoms. The goal is 1) for me to provide education (about symptoms, causes, coping tools, wellness, communication, etc.), and 2) for the client to discover the answers they have inside of themselves and develop confidence in ones' self. I offer compassion and respect to all clients. Often, my clients are struggling with worries, anxiety and/or low confidence. I provide a space to speak through sensitive topics.
Mind, Body, and Soul Counseling is an integrative mental health practice that serves children, adults, couples and families. Topics of expertise include: addiction, family and divorce, trauma, and LGBTQIA. I am a licensed psychologist with 23 years of experience, practicing in NY, KS, and WA. I have several years of experience working in college counseling centers and specialize in working with university students who are experiencing anxiety, depression, difficulties with adjustment and life transitions, identity issues, relationship challenges, and many other problems. I work with clients to increase understanding of how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors relate. I work in collaboration with clients to identify their goals and to learn specific skills to improve their overall functioning and well-being. Please note that I have flexible hours Mon-Thurs and will work with your schedule. (My available hours are not limited to what is listed on this site.)
I am a licensed clinical psychologist with over 20 years of experience working in a private practice setting. I received my doctorate in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Albany and completed an APA approved internship at the Medical University of South Carolina. My training emphasized a CBT orientation to treating psychological disorders. After completing my education, I was a member of the doctoral faculty in clinical psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University for almost 30 years before electing to go into private practice full time in July 2020. My experience working at a university as both a professor and program director, has helped me understand the difficulties that students face. Moreover, it has given me insider knowledge about how students can most effectively navigate the challenges that college poses and effectively advocate for themselves with their course instructors. Recently, a colleague and I formed a CBT-based private practice focused on adolescents, young adults and adults. My areas of specialization include OCD, panic and other anxiety disorders, depression and other mood disorders, substance abuse, and body-focused repetitive behaviors (e.g. hair pulling). I conduct a comprehensive evaluation and provide all the treatment directly. Treatment is tailored to the individual needs of the client, but it typically involves a combination of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), exposure and response prevention (ERP), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I am committed to providing the best treatment available to my clients, which may involve (at their request) a referral for psychiatric consultation, inclusion of family members, and home visits. Please visit my website at http://cbtspecialistsnj.com for more information about me and the problems I treat.
I work with all that are misunderstood. While my specialty is working with autistics and ADHD, due to misdiagnoses in females, adopted youth, LGTBQIA2S+, and BIPOC, I welcome all so that we can discover an affirmative proper assessment for answers and treatment. I specialize in helping children learn practical methods for managing difficult emotions and difficult situations at school as well as adults in the workplace. I help parents learn research-based parenting that is emotionally safe and improves crisis stabilization at home and school, including throughout the circle of life. I include parents in the process of discovering techniques that actually help children, including improving family function and relationships. In addition, I also support active duty and retired veterans and their families, as well as civilian contractors with PTSD and the difficulties navigating a military lifestyle, as well as transitioning back into a civilian lifestyle. In addition, I also specialize in substance use treatment and parent/family support counseling. I also provide support for those that participate with NY’s self-direction and provide complimentary billing to the participant’s FI without the hassle of self-pay.
I am a clinical psychologist and have been in practice for over 20 years. I specialize in working with individuals and couples ages 18 years and older. I address a variety of concerns including anxiety, depression, relationship/family dynamics and trauma, as well as stressors particular to the college and graduate school experience. My Interest in psychology is based in my wish to help people decrease their pain and expand their lives in ways that are important to them. I am described by my patients as a warm person who creates a safe environment through being respectful and sensitive to who you are: your personality, family, developmental and cultural history, other identities and the emotions you are experiencing. Psychodynamic and insight-oriented, I utilize a variety of techniques, especially Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapeutic approach that is extremely effective for many issues and is known to be especially helpful with trauma recovery. IFS helps individuals, as well as couples, tease apart and learn about conflicting feelings or parts of themselves. Doing so improves one’s ability to feel better, function effectively and heal painful experiences from the recent and distant past. In couples work I also utilize Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based model that helps couples identify difficult cycles of interactions and recognize the needs, hurts and fears that underlie them. Partners emerge from this process feeling more connected with one another in meaningful, supportive and secure ways and are better able to communicate. Research has proven this to be a highly effective form of therapy. I have held positions at several university counseling centers including Fordham University where I was Assistant Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, The Graduate Center in New York City and Princeton University. College and graduate students have always been a significant part of my practice.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, offering individual therapy in the state of New York. I enjoy helping others and have over 20 years experience in the field of Behavioral Health. I offer individual therapy using a variety of approaches to meet individual needs. Some of the therapeutic techniques incorporated during sessions may derive from strength based, person-centered and cognitive behavioral approaches to treatment. I am committed to providing a safe environment for clients to gain insight, identify their strengths, self-worth, and develop positive coping skills, so that they're able to overcome various challenges as they embark on your therapeutic journey.

Many of the people I work with are Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) who are struggling to navigate multiple areas of their life like work, school, family, relationships, or the intersectionalities of their identities. Many talk about often feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or stuck. This then kicks off to what feels like a never ending cycle of confusion, frustration, depression, and anxiety. Therapy is an opportunity to find clarity and work through these obstacles to help people get their life back on track. My clients and I work together to develop more mindful behaviors to help lead a more meaningful and healthy life. People develop certain attitudes and perspectives based on their early life experiences to survive when they were younger. But these attitudes and perspectives are not helping now which is part of the reason why people might feel stuck. By looking at these attitudes and perspectives closely, people can learn to change how they talk to themselves, how they react to their emotions. and take more thoughtful actions to move forward towards a more authentic and fulfilling life. My practice integrates several evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that encompasses principles of person-centered, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed, multiculturalism, and strength-based values. With my compassionate, collaborative, non-judgmental, and down-to-earth style, therapy can address the things that are getting in the way of people’s life so that they can move forward. COMMON EXPERIENCES THAT I WORK WITH PEOPLE ON: - It feels like your mind is playing tricks on you - It feels like your eyes or ears are playing tricks on you - It feels like something odd is going on or hard to explain - Confused at times whether something is real or imaginary - You feel suspicious or mistrustful of others - It feels like you have little control over your thoughts - It feels like others can hear your thoughts or read your mind - Having thoughts or beliefs that you or others find strange - Race-related identity, culture, and intersectionality - Cultural and systemic trauma and oppression
