Therapists for college students near 19122
My name is Sarah and I am a therapist, coach and community organizer. I specialize in working with activists, organizers and politically left gen individuals who struggle with burnout, overwhelm and balance. You may be struggling with self-doubt, fear about the future and compassion fatigue. I can help with that. I work with individuals who are navigating trauma associated with living under capitalism. During our first few sessions together, we will begin to bridge the gap between your pain and systematic structures that impact you deeply. You'll begin to experience yourself as part of a whole community, not just an individual. Therapy with me will be political, restorative, healing and empowering.

I am a Licensed Social Worker (LSW), and a queer and non-binary person who uses they/them pronouns. I am also half-Taiwanese and half-White, neurodiverse and chronically ill. I love working with clients who don’t fit neatly into society’s pre-determined “boxes,” and are seeking to experience more enjoyment, fulfillment, and authenticity in their own lives – especially in terms of expressing themselves fully. This may involve experiences of gender, sexuality or perhaps a life transition such as career change, I’m open to all of it. Ultimately, I am curious about learning about people for who they are, and how they move through the world with whatever intersections of identity they may possess. My approach is grounded in anti-oppression and social justice principles and centered around the foundation of a genuine and compassionate therapeutic relationship with each and every client. I am here for the open acknowledgment of all that you have experienced, and all that you are, by providing plenty of space for both curiosity and reflection. In our work together, I will prioritize your autonomy, trusting you as the expert for you. Through a collaborative, non-judgmental, “as structured as you want it” approach, I am here to show up for you - to support you through your walk through life – however that may look like for you. I am trained in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and take a Strength-Based and Culturally Sensitive approach. I utilize Psychodynamic therapy and techniques and skills taken from other modalities as needed, as they apply to the work you would like to do in therapy.
YOU are the expert on yourself. I have had training and life experiences, but I believe that you hold within yourself the power to make the changes that you want to see happen in your life, but nobody has ever shown you that power before. I believe in helping you discover and awaken that power through whatever means you feel comfortable, and sometimes UNcomfortable! I believe in the uniqueness of every individual and work to find that in every person I meet through my work, my travels and everyday trips to the grocery store or walks in the neighborhood with my dog! I have had my own struggles with depression and anxiety in the past, and was a bit of an antisocial teen...I have seen it all, so you can feel safe talking with me about ANYTHING and I won't make you feel judged:)
I'm a little weird and sarcastic and work best with clients who are a little weird and sarcastic. I specialize in working with clients who have experienced some form of trauma - this may include religious trauma, sexual assault, harrassment, bullying, intimate partner violence, human trafficking, violent crimes, accidents, incarceration, and refugee status. I also have experience working with clients dealing with anxiety, depression, and OCD, and those dealing with life transitions, including transition to and out of college, changes in identity and changes in religion/loss of faith.
Our practice provides psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A psychoanalytic approach to treatment offers a comprehensive and nuanced framework for addressing trauma, anxiety, depression, identity struggles, self-esteem, and a sense of self. If advisable, we can also provide careful expert medication management that is informed by our therapeutic work together. Our approach facilitates an environment where people are able to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and wishes in a setting that is inherently collaborative, caring, and non-judgemental. A strong therapeutic relationship is the most powerful means of treatment and developing this alliance is an essential priority for me.

College is an exciting time though it can be an overwhelming one as well. College comes with its own unique set of challenges - increased workload, the need for greater time management, increased independence, and trying to find a good work-life balance, to name a few. College life can bring on new anxiety or exacerbate pre-existing anxiety, and managing this and coping in healthy and effective ways can prove difficult at times. Anxiety and stress can also trigger new or worsen pre-existing Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), like Excoriation Disorder (skin picking) and Trichotillomania (hair pulling). If you are a female student struggling with anxiety and need help managing it, and/or are having a difficult time with BFRBs, I would love to work with you. Together we will work on identifying stressors/triggers as well as strategies and skills you can use to better manage your anxiety and/or your BFRB. I look forward to meeting you!
College is this interesting time of transition where you are given an opportunity to explore independence away from your parents, hometown, and all that feels comfortable. But for many, this independence and freedom can be lonely, confusing and downright uncomfortable. You may feel like you are not cut out to succeed in such a high pressure environment. Decisions can seem overwhelming. Am I in the right major? What internship should I choose? Should I study abroad? Do I need to take a semester off? How do I manage my money? The pressure to perform academically can be intense and feel overwhelming. Picking a major, choosing classes, second guessing your decisions, and simply managing time and assignments can feel insurmountable. If you previously struggled with time management or organization, you may find your safety net is now far away and now your grades are suffering. I have worked with many students just like you. I work to treat a range on issues that get in the way of optimal academic performance - from depression to anxiety to ADHD. I further specialize in working with students who are also parents. Parenting young children while working towards your degree is no small feat. Pregnancy and/or postpartum during graduate school is challenging but together we can get through it. I have spent the last 15 years working with clients across the lifespan with a variety of needs, specializing in life transitions, navigating change, personal growth and development, anxiety and depression, and helping clients to uncover the origin point or root cause of their symptoms, and heal from there. My background as an energy healing practitioner and mindfulness meditation teacher inform my multi-dimensional approach, which is grounded in presence, practicality, and play.
Are you feel tired pleasing others and ignoring your own needs? Bold Brown Therapy is a culturally informed practice where healing speaks your language. You do not have to explain your culture as you begin your healing journey. I am aware taking the first step is hard and scary, at Bold Brown Therapy I focus on holistic and collaborative care. This is rooted in CBT,DBT,IFS,and EMDR modalities to go below the surface of the presenting concerns such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, body image, intergenerational trauma, people pleasing, and chronic health conditions.
I am a licensed social worker and enjoy working with adolescents and adults as they navigate the vast and diverse landscape of the human experience. Major life transitions, work stress, grief and loss, trauma, relationship issues, or simply feeling “stuck"...regardless of your reasons for seeking therapy, I consider it a privilege to provide nonjudgmental support and productive insight as we work towards your goals together. My therapeutic style is collaborative, integrative and person-centered. With an emphasis on facilitating safety and comfort in confiding personal experiences, I help clients uncover aspects of those experiences that are outside a person's awareness, to promote understanding, greater freedom of choice in life, and lasting change. Beyond insight work, I value working together to identify practical ways we can increase self-compassion and psychological resiliency.
