Hi, I am a nationally recognized psychotherapist, sex therapist, author of for Better for worse forever: discover the path to lasting Love, national speaker, national radio and television expert guest, Advice Columnist for Dan's papers in the Hamptons and host of THE ASK BEATTY SHOW on the Progressive Radio Network. I have a private practice in NYC and East Hampton. And more importunately, I LOVE WOEKING WITH COLLEGE AGE STUDENTS. For more information about me, visit my BeattyCohan.com website.
I offer sessions that are client focused and curious. In our sessions, we co-create a space with compassion, creativity and humor to foster an environment where you can feel both safe and challenged to grow. I practice with a psychodynamic relational approach that is trauma-informed and socially aware of power and privilege, critical of psychological paradigms that pathologize suffering. I specialize in working with queer and trans clients with a particular focus on trauma, dissociation, and grief. I ground my work in an anti-oppressive and queer-affirming approach that acknowledges the many experiences we bring on both an individual and societal level.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private practice in midtown Manhattan. When I decided to go back to school for a master’s degree, I chose social work because I felt strongly about its foundational belief that focus should be on both a person and their environment. During graduate school at Fordham University I saw many appealing paths I could continue on after graduation. While both macro and micro levels of practice are extremely important, I felt best suited for work with individuals on a deeper level. I wanted to further my education and went on to complete the four-year postgraduate training program in Adult Psychoanalysis and Comprehensive Psychotherapy from The National Institute for the Psychotherapies. Prior to private practice I worked with a diverse population in various clinics throughout New York City. In addition to private practice I have been guest faculty at the Training Institute for Mental Health and taught a course on Eating Disorders. In March 2020, I completed a post master’s program in Spirituality and Social Work at New York University.

It is typically a weekly meeting between you and your counselor that gives you the space to have an open dialogue about what you are facing, confront your feelings in a more honest way, or to decide how you want to approach solving a problem in your life. The length of counseling is unique for each individual, depending upon on your needs and goals. Essentially, the counseling process is driven by you. We have two therapists at our facility, Bushra Husain, DSW LCSW, Maryum Khwaja, LCSW.

I GREW UP IN THE IN-BETWEEN — moving back and forth between the US and China, I know first-hand what it is like to be faced with the unknown, the struggle of finding yourself in a new place, a new culture, a new stage of life, or a new identity. I FIND JOY in helping people find the pieces of themselves they can rely on and fall in love with through it all. My goal is to honor the beauty of your existence while teaching you the skills that can carry you through rougher times. The process of healing, learning who you are and what you need to care for yourself, is a challenging but rewarding one. IT TAKES COURAGE to confront and accept yourself completely, and I hope to provide a compassionate and safe space for you to explore, to grieve, to rage, or to find joy in everything that you've experienced. The fact that you have survived everything so far to be here now is more important than anything else. It is an honor for me to witness your courage and your strength. IT IS A PRIVILEGE to be a part of your journey. I admire you. You matter to me.
