I view therapy as the process of developing a better understanding of thoughts, emotions and patterns. I utilize a person-centered therapy approach to create a warm, non-judgmental atmosphere where you can feel comfortable and safe. Through the journey of self-discovery, your needs and wants from the therapy process may change. This is why I pull from different evidence-based therapy approaches such as CBT and positive psychology to best fit with your needs at the time. I have experience working with a variety of mental health concerns. However, no two people are the same. Together we will work towards your unique goals utilizing the individual strengths you bring. Deciding to begin therapy can be scary. I will help to illuminate the process and ease your concerns. I am currently accepting new clients. I look forward to hearing from you and starting this journey together.
Andrea Bliss is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (NY) and Licensed Professional Counseling (NJ) with a decade of experience working with a variety of clients. She believes in creating a safe, collaborative, and open space to process challenges her clients are working through.
Do you struggle with often thinking about the worst case scenario? Does it affect your ability to sleep, function at work, and enjoy certain activities? Do you feel overwhelmed by things that you constantly have to do, resulting in feeling stuck and unable to take any action? Do you wonder if you’ll ever be able to live a life that is free of anxiety? People are feeling anxious on a regular basis now more than ever. However, life does not have to stay like this. Therapy can help you conquer tasks by learning coping skills to manage these day-to-day stressors. In my practice, I use a combination of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness techniques to help you manage these daily stressors. You will learn realistic coping skills to then conquer that feeling of being stuck. I also emphasize the importance of the mind/body connection.

My background is working with college and graduate/medical student populations. I specialize in relationships and attachment issues, family problems, depression, anxiety, grief, academic stress, adjustment and identity concerns. I enjoy working with my clients to explore how their problems developed, build understanding around why their problematic patterns continue, and empower them to make meaningful changes in their lives. My approach to therapy is integrative and collaborative. I often take an interpersonal approach to help clients face difficult emotions while also employing skills based techniques such as cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral therapy. My style is conversational and my goal is for the therapeutic space to feel comfortable and allow the client to be their authentic self.
We are experiencing challenging times. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are numerous and have created a long lasting crisis situation that is exacerbating depression, anxiety, feelings of fear and hopelessness, and triggering unhealthy regressive patterns and behaviors. It has placed stress on marriages, partnerships and families, and has left us feeling disconnected, frustrated and fearful. We are also experiencing a massive shift in our paradigm regarding race and ethnicity, which necessitates a different therapeutic consciousness that is more holistic, and that includes the issue of how racism and inequality affect mental health. As we navigate the “new normal,” it’s important to have a supportive space that can help define issues that are problematic so we can adjust accordingly to the harmful effects of the current crisis. In addition to treating mood disorders and trauma that affect daily functioning, as a relationship therapist, I believe the foundation of all relationships begins with the most important relationship of all – the one you have with yourself. Perhaps the life you have is different from the life you desire. If so, we will focus on core issues that might be preventing you from living that life. Some of the challenges you might be facing at this time include: Toxic/unhealthy dynamics in families of origin. A lack of strong role models. The search for a partner who more closely fulfills your needs. The decision of when/if to start a family. A career that means more than just a paycheck and allows you to live up to your full potential and desires. Unexpected health challenges. A nonconforming identity. We will not only address symptoms. We will examine the changes you want to make to live a more fulfilling life.

I believe that being in therapy is about creating space for positive change. When we can slow down and make room for ourselves, we can grow and create lasting adjustments that make our lives more balanced and enjoyable. I work collaboratively with clients, providing a safe and non-judgmental space to explore issues, problem solve, navigate life transitions, develop new and creative coping skills, and strengthen one’s relationship with themselves and with others. I specialize in helping with stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, and addiction recovery. I also work extensively with artists of all kinds who are experiencing creative blocks or stagnation in their art/creative practices and life. Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art materials and the creative process to help people express, process, and integrate their thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Art therapy is for everyone, not just people who identify as artists or have experience with the visual arts. Clients see me for talk therapy and or art therapy. All sessions are tailored to the preferences and goals of my clients. My approach is holistic and person-center, integrating traditional talk therapies and art therapy with mindfulness/body-based practices. I am a patient and compassionate therapist, who values humor and direct communication, dedicated to supporting my clients in their healing process and personal growth, enacting the changes they desire to see within themselves.
Welcome! Today is a really big day for you. You have made a decision to make a change in your life for the better. You are to be congratulated and supported for this. I bet it wasn't easy getting here. Making these changes can get very complicated along the way. Are you ready to take the necessary steps to be the change you are looking for? Do you want to exceed your own expectations in your life? Are you focused, humble and willing to consider the thoughtful input of others in order to achieve your goals? If your answer is "yes" to these questions - then let's begin! One thing to consider... nothing changes if nothing changes. The way we live our lives is completely based on the way we perceive it. This statement is the bedrock foundation of my counseling practice. With each area of assistance I offer, the rewards of mindfulness, empowerment and ultimately self-realization are the goals to be pursued. Everything we do in our life IS a choice. We can choose to be empowered or not.

Welcome and congratulations on taking the first step towards meeting with a therapist! You feel that that you don't have a good sense of who you are. You behave in different ways around your friends, family members, and colleagues. It's hard for you to keep your emotions in check and at times you feel your emotions are out of control. As a result, you react in ways that make things more challenging for yourself and others. Your relationships often have conflict, friends don't seem to stick around, and you can't figure out why. You wonder if you're doing something wrong and if there is something you can do differently. You question why things at home, with work/school, or with relationships can't be easier. When you try to handle these problems, it seems like things only get better for a little while, or they just get worse. I help clients figure out what truly matters most to them in life; assist clients in learning how to connect with and live in the present moment; support clients in finding ways to handle intense emotions, respond in ways that don't erupt their relationships, and to weather through the tough times.

Having spent part of my life in Europe and Africa, my background helps me work with a diverse range of clients - from college students and veterans to corporate employees and expats. I am a clinical psychologist and cultural psychologist (Rutgers, PsyD; Harvard, BA) with 19 years of experience providing psychotherapy to adults. My specialties include depression, trauma, and anxiety as well as stress, life transitions, cultural adjustment, and relationship issues. I am a caring, interactive therapist and use an integrative approach (ACT, CBT, psychodynamic, and mindfulness techniques) to provide you with a safe space to heal and practice new tools as you reset your life compass. I see therapy as a gift to yourself: making time to build knowledge, awareness, and compassion, try new behaviors, and improve your quality of life. Change is possible at any age if there is courage, flexibility, willingness, and action. I also believe that a variety of things can help us heal and enrich our lives (e.g. music, sports, nature, friendships). I look forward to starting this chapter of compassion, healing, and growth with you and invite you to schedule a free consultation today.
