Therapists for college students near New York University
I am an experienced, long time psychotherapist, who helps create a nurturing environment that is warm, curious and non judgemental. I am focused on understanding the client and supporting the optimal healing process. I have an unconditional commitment to each of my clients to be open and honest, to be focused on their life-enhancing goals, and to work in a proactive manner to help them achieve these goals in the briefest possible time. No single approach works for everyone. Some issues may be addressed with a short-term, solution-focused approach. More complex issues may need a combination of approaches over a longer time.

I start with listening and seek to cultivate a perspective that enlivens, enlightens and unburdens. I use an integrative psychoanalytic approach founded in curiosity and collaboration to address problems relating to trauma, depression, anxiety or self-esteem that can undermine ones ability to thrive interpersonally, creatively, sexually or professionally. Whether it's a life-change, a search for meaning, creative blocks, frustration with the quality of relationships or something else, I will meet you there. Through listening and talking, we will explore internal experience and how it impacts relating to oneself and others. Beyond psychoanalysis. I am also a trained attachment-based EMDR therapist, a powerful modality to process trauma when words don't seem to cut it. I may also use CBT & mindfulness training. These approaches can help develop an ability to detect unhelpful thinking styles, a stronger mind to body connection, and an increased awareness in the present. To give you a chance to practice outside our sessions, I encourage meditation and journaling. With a background in anthropology, I have a special interest in how culture shapes each of us, and always consider the impact of your culture in context with the struggles you face.
Do you ever feel weighed down by feelings of sadness or anxiety? Do those feelings make it difficult to find the motivation to get through the day and positively interact with others? Do they cause you to miss out on the joys of life, which in turn, intensifies those negative feelings? Maybe you feel like you're standing in quick sand. No matter how hard you try, you find that you're still stuck. I am here to help you uncover the tools to free yourself and forge a path towards healing. Hello, I am so happy you are here! I am Aliyah Mitchell, a licensed mental health counselor in New York State. I have experience working with individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and self-harm. My goal is to provide a supportive and safe environment to every client that I work with, in order to assist them in working towards their therapeutic goals. I believe that the foundation of a good therapeutic relationship is trust. My first goal is to build rapport with you and create an environment where you feel comfortable sharing and expressing your feelings.

Our therapists combine effective, evidence-based treatments that provide a holistic approach to healing, as part of a treatment plan that you and your therapist will build together. They are skilled in many modalities including but not limited to CBT, DBT, IFS, EMDR, MI, inner child work, and narrative, relational, psychodynamic therapies. We look forward to getting to know you!
I approach each individual with curiosity & acceptance. I see my clients as the real experts on themselves- each in the process of navigating the world & learning as they go. I'm actively non-judgmental & find it most therapeutic to provide clients with a safe context in which to explore thoughts & feelings, gain insight, & problem solve in a lasting & empowering manner. I actively listen & offer feedback, reflection, levity, education &, depending upon the issue at hand, more directive advice. The needs of each client naturally vary. I believe it is important to meet people where they are, rather than to apply a specific modality or approach. One of my guiding principles is to "Assume Nothing." I find this allows a clients most pressing needs to unfold more naturally. One of my specialty areas is the human-animal bond. Companion animals play an important role in our individual lives and as members of the family. Issues that can be a focus of treatment: loss of a pet, pets and divorce, children and pets, illness of a pet, emotional support animals, animal advocacy.
*ACCEPTING CLIENTS FOR JANUARY 2025.* I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist, and together, we can explore how your past experiences have shaped who you are today. You will gain self-understanding, self-compassion, and begin to feel happier and more fulfilled. My clients are individuals and couples with a wide variety of concerns, including relationship issues, anxiety, grief, depression, and trauma. I can help you navigate unwanted emotions and get you ready to cope with any difficult life circumstances that might arise in the future. My past clients have described me as “non-judgmental, kind, and someone who calls them on their bullshit.” I also love working with people in non-traditional relationships as well as LGBT individuals and couples. I also specialize in transgender-affirmative therapy, and have worked with trans and non-binary clients who are questioning gender, people who are in the middle of a physical and/or social transition, and individuals who are either post-transition or have made other decisions in this regard. Even if your gender identity is not the topic you want to explore in therapy, I will provide an accepting environment where you can explore whatever you think will be most useful. If this sounds like what you are looking for, please email me to set up a 20-minute phone conversation so we can see if we would be a good fit.
I help people alleviate uncomfortable feelings, gain insight, and increase coping skills to overcome stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues and life transitions (such as relocation, school, career transitions). Part of being human means that you will struggle at some point with unproductive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, or unexpectedly have to manage something life throws your way. People I work with are motivated to develop skills to increase their self-confidence, communication, decision making and boundary setting skills. As well as optimize their emotional health/ well-being and are seeking tools to assist them in the process. I take an active and collaborative approach to help create tangible strategies to deal more effectively in the moment with difficult experiences and feelings. In addition to helping people alleviate current pain points, I assist in obtaining skills to develop a wellness practice that will be beneficial beyond sessions. My approach is person-centered and informed by evidence-based practices, including Lifestyle Medicine (nutrition, physical activity, sleep hygiene, and stress management), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness Practice and Solution Focused Therapy. My goal is for you to leave each session feeling empowered and in control of their life.

If balancing academic/work pressure and your personal life is leaving you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or burned out, I am here to help. Many clients I work with enter therapy feeling stuck in cycles of overthinking, self-doubt, people-pleasing, or pushing themselves at the expense of their well-being. Perfectionism and self-criticism often make it even harder to slow down or feel satisfied. I specialize in therapy with college/graduate students and young professionals struggling with anxiety, perfectionism, early career stress, relationship concerns, and life transitions. I also work with survivors of sexual trauma and individuals who want to better understand how past experiences continue to shape their emotions, relationships, and sense of self. My approach is warm, collaborative, and values-focused. After working together, my clients often have greater self-confidence, increased insight into how past experiences shape current patterns, and a more compassionate relationship with themselves. I integrate psychodynamic therapy with evidence-based behavioral approaches such as CBT, ACT, and DBT, along with emotion-focused, self-compassion, and strengths-based perspectives. We'll explore practical tools to move forward from unhelpful patterns so that you can live more authentically. I am here to support you in understanding yourself with greater insight and compassion, easing anxiety’s influence on your wellbeing, and building a life that reflects your values rather than fear or pressure. Hi, I’m Kayla Cunningham! I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and for the past 10 years, I’ve been helping people work through life’s challenges and changes. College can be exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming — juggling classes, friendships, family expectations, and figuring out what’s next isn’t always easy. I’ll take the time to get to know you, understand what you’re going through, and adjust my approach to what you need — because there’s no one “right” way to do this.
