I am a clinical social worker who takes a Rogerian approach to therapeutic relationships. After 9 years of public health experience I have developed a broad skill set. My expertise includes trauma informed care, parenting, smoking cessation, substance use, intimate partner violence, healthy masculinity, medical adherence and perinatal mood disorders. I have years of experience working on multidisciplinary teams and speak the language of healthcare. I utilize evidence based practices and have been trained in a variety of modalities including EMDR, motivational interviewing, tobacco treatment and cessation, eco-therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
As a Therapist, I help people who want to find their voice, feel understood, and gain insight about themselves but who may also fear change, being seen, losing themselves, or maybe have difficulty letting go of instilled habits and beliefs. Who do I help? My clinical experience includes working with clients who present or experience anxiety, depression, negative body acceptance/image, low self-esteem, disordered eating, intuitive eating challenges, trauma (sexual, emotional, physical), codependency, chronic illness, autoimmune diseases, adjustment challenges, confusion during identity exploration and development, sensory issues, racial tension, those wanting to recover from narcissistic and psychopathic abuse, and those wanting to increase their overall physical and mental well-being. I am neurodiversity-affirming, LGBTQIA-affirming, and culturally competent and sensitive. Sound like you? Let me help! - Lisa A. Barella, MS, LCMHCA, NCC
Bright View Counseling was founded in 2020 by Michael Clark-Borenstein LCMHC (Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor) with the mission of bringing a better counseling experience to the people of Charlotte, North Carolina. After struggling through the challenges we all faced in 2020 and continue to face in 2021 due to the global pandemic, therapy and counseling have become something we could all benefit from having more of. If you or your child have been struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, work or life-related stress, behavioral changes, or simply struggling to adjust to the big changes we all faced this past year, you are not alone. We’re breaking the traditional mold of talk therapy and counseling and bringing a new, brighter idea of what therapy could and should look like with our ‘Therapy With A Twist!’ approach. Our therapy approach is holistic, humanistic, and person-focused. We bring the power of the natural world into the therapeutic process. We take walks outside, participate in outdoor activities with clients, and integrate activities and games. We also get a helping paw from our office dog, Charlotte, who comes into sessions to provide a furry friend to hug, pet, and receive emotional support from. We’ve adopted all of these practices to continue to work with teletherapy as well. We take virtual walks, have outdoor virtual sessions, and have even participated in virtual fishing! Our outlook on the client-therapist relationship differs from other counseling services. At Bright View Counseling, we forge a trusting relationship with clients. Therapy can be an intimidating process for new clients. We strive to create a casual, comfortable environment where our clients can feel safe and free to express themselves honestly and openly without fear of judgment.

I enjoy working with humans from all walks of life who’d like some support and to be able to process their feelings and trauma. We laugh, we cry and we get through it, together.

Throughout my life, I have found people to be fascinating as each person has unique stories, values, and beliefs that guide their life. This curiosity of people combined with the belief that each person has intrinsic value and worth led me to the field of counseling. Through using collaborative, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approaches, I hope to facilitate a healing space where clients can learn how to care for themselves holistically, pursue personal goals, and address mental health concerns, all while feeling accepted for who they are as a person. I completed my clinical internship experience at Appalachian State University’s counseling center during 2023 - 2024 academic year. During this time I developed skills for working with clients facing life transitions, generalized anxiety, social anxiety, depression, spiritual/ religious concerns, emotional dysregulation, interpersonal relationship concerns, low self-confidence, grief and academic distress. My main theoretical approach is person-centered therapy while also using creative, culturally-aware and trauma-informed methods. I have a passion for working with clients who are working through anxiety, depression, academic stress, neurodivergence and life-transitions. Please reach out to set up an appointment today!

Maybe that's working through traumatic events, processing emotions, or just having a big vent.
