Hi, I'm Dr. Vlahakes and I'm happy to offer both individual and group counseling/therapy sessions! At this time I do have availability for new clients. Please use the contact information on this page to get started. FYI I'm part of a group practice called Brighter Life Therapy.
I specialize in helping people to manage and recover from eating disorders and co-occurring illnesses. I believe that clients who struggle with eating disorders have inherently painful emotions which are managed by various harmful behaviors so I work collaboratively with clients, their support network, and their outpatient providers to find ways to change these behaviors and manage emotions in both the short and long term. In my outpatient practice, I see individuals of all ages and genders who struggle with a wide variety of challenges related to disordered eating, body image issues, and low self-esteem. When I'm not seeing outpatient clients, I also work full-time at a local eating disorder facility, and am able to facilitate referrals to local treatment centers as needed. I remain committed to continuing to work with clients while they need a higher level of support. In addition to in-office individual therapy, I also offer recovery coaching in the community. This can include a wide variety of support including meal coaching, food exposures, and body image improvement coaching. Please contact me for additional information. If you are interested in becoming a new client, please email me for the fastest response.
Deciding to see a therapist requires awareness and regard for oneself. I have deep respect for what has brought you here, and this will form the foundation of our work together. Perhaps you seek therapy now because of a crisis that is presenting new challenges or bringing up old, unresolved problems. Or you now feel ready to address a long-standing pattern that has caused much difficulty and pain over time. Your struggles may be affecting not only your relationships with others but also how you relate to yourself. My job is to help you expand your capacity for what you can do alone. I offer a combination of psychoanalytic and CBT/DBT informed approaches while being mindful of both the universality and cultural individuality of our experiences. I have worked extensively with a range of people, from those in the throes of PTSD or addiction to ones dealing with transitions or looking for greater connection in relationships. I hold the conviction that exploration of the past is necessary as it influences and shapes our circumstances, while at times being present to our anxieties and resources in the moment is crucial. By coming here, you have already begun your work. If you think that I may be of help, let us have a conversation. It would be my privilege to talk with you.

I specialize in work with older teens & young adults, including young professionals and college students. I specialize in treatment of anxiety, depression, panic attacks, social anxiety, self esteem, stress related to “perfectionism,” & stress from life transitions— being a new high school student, college student, or a young professional comes with many sudden life changes, & you don’t have to navigate this period of your life alone. I prioritize the therapeutic relationship & believe it’s the small things that create this alliance; you’ll notice how I remember those details you told me because what you say is important to me! Each person’s treatment is approached uniquely because each person is different in their own special way. I aim to be thorough in my sessions & strive for each session to be a resting place. I offer down-to-earth talk with my clients about their concerns. I believe you will find the therapeutic process to be nonjudgmental and insightful. With me,the pressure to “be a certain way” is off. I often use a therapeutic relationship-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) framework in my sessions to equip you to help take charge of your struggles. In the end, we are all human and many of us suffer with mental health concerns. We should never feel ashamed over this. I encourage you to reach out.
I am a psychiatrist in private practice for over 20 years, treating patients by integrating psychotherapy, psychoanalysis and, when indicated psychopharmacology. As a physician, I am able to evaluate patients with symptoms which may be medical or psychiatric in origin, understanding the mind-body connection. I see a broad range of patients, some suffering from major mental illness to those healthy individuals seeking to learn more about themselves. A major focus of my private practice is working with college and graduate students. I see students as young as seniors in high school and consult to parents of college age students around the country. I am an Affiliated Psychiatrist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Instructor, Harvard Medical School from 1994-2014. I am a Diplomat, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology re-certified in 2014. I was a staff psychiatrist at Sarah Lawrence College, and more recently, Senior Psychiatric Consultant at Brandeis University from 1997-2012. I believe that every patient is unique, reflecting their development, family history, neuropsychology, traumas, and life experiences. My role is to help the patient develop an integrated personal narrative, exploring unconscious conflicts, understanding the experience of self in relation to others, and to take responsibility, not just for their difficulties, but their strengths as well.

You've faced so many challenges, and trauma has a knack for taking over everything. Maybe you try to keep busy to escape from it all, but most of the time, it's all-consuming. Your work or studies suffer, because you can’t concentrate. Your relationships are affected as well. It can be hard for others who haven't experienced similar struggles to truly understand you and what’s happening for you. Even for you, finding the right words to articulate it all can be tough. This makes connecting with others a bit more challenging. But trauma doesn't have to be your whole story. It doesn't have to consume your days, thoughts, relationships, and work. Even the trauma that stems from marginalization and oppression doesn't have to define you. Therapy can be where you separate out what has happened to you, from who you are and want to be. It can provide a space to discover peace, clarity, and even moments of joy amidst life's challenges. My passion lies in supporting survivors of interpersonal trauma, particularly those who have experienced child abuse, as well as individuals who face the daily impact of systemic oppression, including BIPOC, LGBTQAI+ individuals, and those who and those who navigate the complex intersections of marginalization. As a biracial Asian and White woman, I daily I navigate the hurtful impacts of racism and sexism in our world. Being multiracial allows me to see the world from different angles, and I appreciate both the difficulties and advantages it brings. I am 3rd-generation Chinese. I carry within me a deeply personal understanding of the burdens of generational trauma and the stress of acculturation within my family. However, I am aware that my experiences are limited to my own point of view and I don't assume to fully grasp how similar experiences have affected others. I approach everyone I meet, regardless of our similarities, with humility.
I believe therapy can help people overcome obstacles, achieve their full potential, and work towards meaningful change. Therapy is a collaborative process, and I work closely with my clients to develop customized treatment plans that meet their unique needs. I have experience working with clients with a wide range of presenting concerns, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, trauma, substance use, relationship issues, and life transitions. My approach to therapy is rooted in compassion, empathy, and respect for each individual's experiences and perspectives. I draw on a range of evidence-based techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, and solution-focused therapy, to help clients achieve their goals. My goal as a therapist is to empower my clients to live their best lives. I'm committed to helping each person I work with develop the skills and tools they need to overcome challenges, build resilience, and find joy and fulfillment in their lives.
