Many of us experience stress and anxiety on a daily basis. While sometimes we feel in control of these emotions, other times it can feel like they are controlling us. Whether you are dealing with day-to-day stressors, or those brought on by major life transitions, learning how to identify and manage the feelings you experience can be vital to having happy, healthy relationships with others and with yourself. It’s my belief that each individual is the expert on themselves. My role in sessions is to be curious and work with you to explore challenges, experiences, and emotions. Through this exploration we can create a “tool box” of skills and strategies that work best for you. I encourage you to reach out if you are interested in starting services. Finding a therapist who is right for you is important, and I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have!
When your car breaks down on the side of the road you don’t hesitate to call for assistance because you don’t wish to remain “stuck,” and the same logic can be said for the pursuit of therapy. Managing stress, overcoming the inevitable challenges life throws our way and building healthy relationships are valued skills that I feel passionately about supporting others in achieving. I hope to serve as a guide in uncovering the resiliency and confidence you already possess, to begin to live your fullest life.

I am a licensed mental health counselor. My goal is to support clients with their mental health as well as stress management, relationship issues, and finding the appropriate services. Therapy does not have to solely be for people in crisis. Being proactive with your mental health and attending therapy can have long-lasting benefits. My first goal when starting with a client is building rapport. In order for therapy to be effective, there needs to be a mutual trust between the client and therapist. I primarily use a cognitive behavioral and person centered approach to therapy. Although every session typically includes “talk therapy,” I also try to use a variety of interventions. I also have a therapy dog in my office who loves to cuddle on the couch with patients.
My strength as a psychologist is to deeply attend to each client's emotions, thoughts, and life context. If you seek to participate in therapy with me, we will work together to create a judgment-free and safe space. In my practice of therapy, I effectively balance exploratory and supportive therapy with the latest research and evidence-based interventions. I provide psychotherapy for older adolescents (16+), adults, older adults, college students, professionals, military-affiliated individuals, couples, and families. My advanced training includes a postdoctoral fellowship at McLean Hospital, with a clinical appointment at Harvard Medical School, and an APA-accredited internship at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Alongside my private practice, my professional experience includes teaching clinical psychology at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. I am happy to answer any questions you may have or set up an initial phone conversation to determine if we both think we might work well together to meet your goals. I currently have weekday daytime and limited evening availability. I also offer both in-person and telehealth (virtual) therapy. I look forward to hearing from you!
James Verdery is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor located in Acton, MA. James works with children, adolescents, teenagers, and adults who struggle to manage their emotions and feel in control of their lives. His clients find themselves overwhelmed by feelings of anger, inadequacy, frustration, confusion, sadness, or loneliness. Despite their best efforts, they feel like they aren’t in control of their lives. They might suffer from low self-esteem, which leads to anxiety at school or in peer groups and can often leads to isolation. James helps these clients to grow their understanding of themselves, their emotions and learn techniques to manage their distress. Clients learn tangible skills in emotional regulation and expression. They practice challenging assumptions, ignoring self-judgments, distraction and grounding exercises, and more. James tailors his treatment style to each client’s individual needs, personalities, and preferences for engaging, effective sessions. James earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology. He is passionate about starting conversations about mental health at an early age. He strives to give clients the skills they need for a lifetime of healthy habits, including strong coping skills that allow individuals to feel meaning and joy in their lives.

Entering into therapy can feel overwhelming and vulnerable. My initial goals are always to understand what brings you into therapy, give you a sense of how I practice, and talk together about whether I am a good fit for you. I encourage an ongoing and open conversation about our treatment relationship and progress towards your goals. I practice from the fundamental belief that healing can occur in an attuned, compassionate relationship marked by curiosity. Clients describe me as interactive, collaborative, warm, and nonjudgemental. My practice is heavily influenced by mindfulness-based approaches. It is a privilege to support clients in making sense of the challenges they are facing, enhance their comfort with riding waves of strong feeling, and to respond to their thoughts and feelings in a more compassionate way.
Your voice and perspective as a woman or girl are celebrated here. This is a dedicated space where you can be comfortable discussing female centered topics and experiences. I believe that social interactions, societal stresses and unique biology impact girls and women in ways that require a female centered lens for mental health treatment. Coming to therapy knowing this is a specialized practice can lead to greater comfort exploring trauma and female specific issues. These deeper conversations build the therapeutic alliance and increase the potential that women and girls will see improvement in their mental health symptoms
