Therapists for college students near New York, NY
Are you feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about what’s going on internally? Whether you’re wrestling with academic pressures, struggling to understand why certain tasks feel harder than they should, or wondering if there’s more to why you feel anxious or disconnected, I’m here to help you find clarity and answers. I’m a psychologist in New York City with a focus on assessments that go beyond surface-level challenges, helping students like you understand who they are and what they need to succeed. Many of the students who find testing helpful are motivated, thoughtful, and want to know themselves better. They may feel like no matter how hard they try, something still feels off, or they feel out of sync with others. If you’ve been wondering if there’s a reason behind your difficulties with focus, social interactions, anxiety, or even low moods, psychological testing can help reveal what’s happening beneath the surface. I work especially well with students who want a deeper understanding of themselves, so they can navigate college life, relationships, and personal goals with confidence. The results of testing shouldn’t feel like another test to understand. My approach is about making sense of what’s going on in a clear, accessible way. My goal is for you to feel equipped to take on college – and life – with greater self-awareness and practical tools that work for you.

I work with individuals navigating all sorts of challenges in their lives. Together, we can address the questions that dwell at the heart of who you are, and how you became that way — a process shaped by the forces within you and in the world at large. I offer both short-term treatment to focus on a specific issue in your life, or longer-term therapy to delve into deeper issues that impact your relationships or mental and emotional wellbeing. I am in trained in Relational Psychodynamic Therapy and also draw from many years of mindfulness training in my work. My approach is ultimately integrative and tailored to fit your needs.
My goal as a therapist is to provide a safe, supportive, empathetic and non-judgmental space to help people explore and overcome life's challenges while feeling seen and heard. I highly value building a strong therapeutic alliance based in authenticity, understanding, and respect as a foundation to the therapeutic process. I have experience working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, PTSD/complex trauma, interpersonal relationship difficulties, life changes and transitions, and other life stressors. I acknowledge the courage it takes to seek help and the work it takes to make meaningful changes. I work collaboratively with clients and personalize treatment based on the needs and goals of the individual. Using an integrative approach that incorporates psychodynamic fundamentals, mindfulness, and cognitive-based interventions, we will work to gain insight, find meaning, and build practical skills and tools in a way that works for you. I believe in providing treatment that considers the whole person, their life experiences, cultural identities, beliefs, and values and I work with my clients to facilitate treatment outcomes beyond symptom reduction, towards true healing and personal growth. I welcome you to reach out if you are interested in working together.
I have a particular interest in college and graduate students. Prior to private practice, I worked at Hunter College. Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It usually means you’ve been carrying a lot for a long time. I work with college students and young adults who are trying to keep up on the outside while feeling stressed, burned out, or unsure of themselves on the inside. Therapy with me is practical, supportive, and focused on helping you understand what’s actually driving your anxiety, overthinking, or self-doubt, and what to do about it in real life. Sessions are a space to slow things down, make sense of what’s going on, and build tools you can use outside of therapy. You don’t need to have the right words, a clear goal, or a crisis to start. We take things at your pace and figure it out together. If you’re curious about therapy but not sure it’s for you, a consultation is a low-pressure way to ask questions and see if it feels like a good fit.

I have extensive experience counseling individuals from diverse backgrounds and helping them deal with various life issues. With my multicultural training, I am able to empathize and relate to each client so that I may identify their needs and help them with the presenting issues.
Hi All! My name is Cari and not so long ago I was a college student..... or at least it feels that way. Looking back I can say I learned a lot in the classroom but more importantly I learned about myself. Mental Health is a issues that has always been swept under the rug. The most significant onset for mental health issues are 18 and onward. This places many college student in a place where they may feel isolated, alone and have no idea what is" wrong" with them. My practice not only focuses on mental health issues but also on substance use, the "hook up" culture, adjustment to college life and many more pertinent struggles young people face today . I did not just gain my experience as a therapist listening to a client on a couch. Much of my work was community based , in very high need neighborhoods in the NYC area. From working in homeless shelters, foster care, and substance use programs, the experience gained was invaluable . I offer more then just a set of listening empathetic ears but an approach to help you rationalize your thoughts and experiences .
Starting with the "here and now," I tailor treatment to you, whether you are looking to change problematic behaviors, get along better with others, make a difficult decision, or develop greater confidence and peace of mind. I offer an integrated approach of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Motivational Interviewing, CBT, and DBT skills to facilitate change and growth. In addition to my experience addressing general life issues, I am very experienced in helping people specifically with addressing problem drinking and substance use.
I offer sessions that are client focused and curious. In our sessions, we co-create a space with compassion, creativity and humor to foster an environment where you can feel both safe and challenged to grow. I practice with a psychodynamic relational approach that is trauma-informed and socially aware of power and privilege, critical of psychological paradigms that pathologize suffering. I specialize in working with queer and trans clients with a particular focus on trauma, dissociation, and grief. I ground my work in an anti-oppressive and queer-affirming approach that acknowledges the many experiences we bring on both an individual and societal level.
Reaching out for help can be hard. We will do our best to provide a safe, supportive environment, when you can feel free to share as much as you need to. We consider therapy to be a collaboration between clinician and patient. Our job is to work with you to help you better understand your inner thoughts and feelings so that you can become the best version of you. We tend to follow patterns of behavior based on our earliest identities. Some of us go through life thinking we are not smart enough, not good looking enough, not capable enough, or not as good as others. It's important to understand that these beliefs are not in fact reality, but an internalized sense of self that we have learned from our earliest experiences. Because of these beliefs, we can often find ourselves repeating unhealthy patterns in relationships, how we deal with stress, social isolation, engaging in unhealthy or risky behaviors, and all manner of acting out in self-destructive ways. Therapy can help re-define who you are, so that instead following these unhealthy patterns, you can make choices that are informed by what you really want, as opposed to what you think you deserve. Therapy is not a quick fix. It takes time and commitment, and it is hard. We are ready to make that commitment with you, and be with you on your journey of self-discovery, so that you can become the author of your own life, rather than letting it be written for you.
