Therapists for college students near New York, NY
“What is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?” -Mary Oliver I've been thinking about this every day since the first time I read it (or rather the first time it smacked me in the face, oh, so many years ago). It's some question, isn't it? Sometimes it inspires me. Sometimes it frightens me. Since it always challenges me, I've rooted my practice philosophy in it. It's kind of like the adult version of 'what do you want to be when you grow up'? How in the world do we answer that? If the question moves you like it does me then we're probably a good fit. Let's talk about the complexities of making life choices and finding fulfillment.

I BELIEVE THAT EACH PERSON is a mosaic of experiences, identities, and values and I will tailor our work to your unique needs and goals. I am attentive to your story as an individual or couple as well as broader cultural and sociopolitical dynamics that may impact your experience. I am collaborative and not mysterious - I will share my thinking with you, explain what I believe you may find helpful and why, and welcome your feedback on what is and is not working for you. I WILL DRAW UPON MY TIME studying biology at Harvard to consider and share with you how biological elements such as sleep science, nutrition, stress response, and more may be impacting your wellbeing. I also am happy to discuss how your sexual health intersects with physical and emotional health, and have several years of experience in sex and relationship counseling. If you struggle with any aspect of sex ranging from desire, arousal, accessing pleasure, self-consciousness, or trauma, I am here to acknowledge the taboos around sex in our society, provide a space for open conversation individually or as a couple, and help you get what you want out of your sexuality and sex life. MY CLINICAL STYLE prioritizes validation and fostering a safe environment to navigate vulnerable topics together. Many people tend to invalidate their own emotions - if this sounds like you, I will support you in developing kinder self-talk and holding space for your feelings. We will uncover insight into why you may be stuck in certain patterns or cycles that are not serving you as an individual or in a relationship and use this knowledge to build new ways of moving forward and living your life how you want to. WE WILL REFLECT ON what gives you fulfillment and how to create a life full of meaning and enjoyment. At the same time, we will explore different tools, including somatic methods and emotional skills, that you can use to reduce stress, and anxiety, reshape negative thinking, improve tension-filled relationships, and overall work towards being happier, healthier, and more productive. We may think of the mind as something intangible, but it lives in the body. By learning to support your mental processes and physical well-being, you can achieve balance and peace. No matter where you are on this journey, I will meet you there and support you.

I am a licensed clinical social worker with a background in mental health, advocacy, and education. Through these experiences, and my own healing journey, I have come to understand the importance of safety, trust, and authenticity as a therapist. I prioritize creating a safe and affirming environment—one that values and elevates you and your lived experiences. I work with individuals struggling to cope with anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and life transitions. I have a particular expertise working with survivors of complex trauma, including interpersonal violence, sexual assault, and attachment wounding.
I am passionate about supporting people on their journeys of self-exploration, empowerment, and healing. While this journey looks different for everyone, therapy provides us with a unique opportunity to learn more about ourselves- our identities, the people and places that have shaped us, and life experiences. I have deep respect for the courage it takes to show up for ourselves in this way and believe we can do so with curiosity and compassion. I believe in the transformative power of feeling deeply seen and valued in the therapeutic relationship and have personally experienced how it can help us cultivate better relationships with ourselves and others. Together, we may want to explore practices that have helped you survive thus far and experiment with new or different strategies. You may be looking to understand big or challenging feelings bubbling up while navigating life’s complexities. Or you may want to feel more rooted in yourself and your values and want to shift into a more embodied way of moving through the world. Whatever brought you here- I’ll support you every step of the way. We’ll work together to explore your unique needs, while honoring your strengths and innate wisdom. I don’t see myself as an “expert,” rather a skilled and caring partner, excited to support you as we navigate this work together. I strive to be anti-oppressive in my approach, paying special attention to the ways in which people are impacted by systems and -isms as well as my own positionality as a therapist. I completed my Bachelor’s in Gender & Women’s Studies and Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and my Master’s in Social Work at Columbia University. I've been providing therapy in community-based settings for the past 5 years, working predominantly with female, trans, and nonbinary survivors of the criminal legal system and family court system as well as survivors of intimate partner violence/ domestic violence. I am especially passionate about supporting student activists and organizers on campus. My practice is neurodiversity-affirming and I have training in self-psychology and AEDP, a trauma-focused somatic-based modality. I am also completing training for internal family systems. Some of the theoretical perspectives that inform my work include attachment theory, relational approaches, liberation psychology, and narrative therapy. I am also deeply influenced by my abolitionist values. Therapy sessions with me typically occur weekly, although bi-weekly is possible for established clients. I am able to meet via telehealth exclusively (my practice is 100% telehealth with no in-person sessions). I am currently accepting insurance and am also an out-of-network provider. This means that you may be eligible to receive reimbursement through your insurance coverage. My full fee is $150 per 45-minute individual therapy session. If you are interested in learning more about what therapy with me might look like, please reach out to schedule a free 15-minute consultation by emailing here: margaret.horwitz@balancedmindofny.com

I work with students who feel like life is moving too fast and expectations are piling up. Maybe you’re stressed about classes, friendships, or future plans, or just feeling unsure of yourself. Therapy is a place to slow down, be heard, and figure out what really matters to you. The people I work with often struggle with stress, self-doubt, or adjusting to big life changes. Together, we explore ways to handle pressure, build confidence, and find balance in your academic and personal life. Sessions are a safe, supportive space to explore your thoughts and feelings. You’ll leave with practical strategies and a clearer sense of your own goals and values, so you can navigate college life with more confidence and calm.

Experiencing anxiety, ambivalence, or dissatisfaction with your life, does not mean you are forced to suffer with these feelings forever. My team and I are committed to examining these emotions, unpacking the underlying issues and helping you find some relief. We are a full-service psychotherapy group, dedicated to helping you alleviate your suffering and develop tools to flourish in a meaningful life. Aristotle believed that happiness is achieved through knowing your true self and acting in accordance with your virtues. Through our work together, we will identify these qualities and help you feel more resilient in the face of adversity. In addition to treating your mental health, we will focus on helping you improve your emotional state, find more meaning in life, and fulfill your potential. By learning to understand yourself we can help you best get your needs met, find purpose and achieve greater life fulfillment.
I provide psychotherapy and contemporary psychoanalysis for adult individuals of all ages, identities, and backgrounds. I use several therapeutic techniques and an integrative approach that is tailored to suit the needs of each individual patient. I believe in the transformative powers of honesty, authenticity and unconditional positive regard. Therapy is ultimately about meaning making. I listen closely to my patients without judgment and without jumping to conclusions. My goal is to understand you on your own terms—free of any rigid diagnoses or other labels. I believe that the heart of this work resides in the therapeutic relationship itself, and to this end, I seek to build bridges of clarity and comfort between us. Our work together will consist of attempting to understand you in a holistic, depth-oriented manner. We will consider how your past might be effecting your present—have you developed patterns in your life that are inhibiting and no longer serve you well? I understand that some people seek out therapy to address a discrete, well-defined issue, while others come out of a more abstract, gnawing sense that something in their life needs to change.
