Has your life turned upside down with unexpected changes, trauma, depression, grief, or increased anxiety? Are you feeling unheard by family, coworkers, or friends? Do you struggle with creating boundaries or breaking unhealthy relationship patterns? I believe you should not face these life changes alone. Let me walk beside you in your journey and unpack these feelings. Self-love and self-care are real, and if no one has told you it's okay to put yourself first! I am Marita Kershaw, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the States of Virginia, New York, and Pennsylvania. I offer individual, family, and couples telehealth therapy sessions. Currently, I solely offer virtual appointments. As a therapist, I believe in building individuals gradually by offering a safe space as they enter a judgment-free zone. I want to know more about you, and I also want you to know me better. If I seem like a good match, I encourage you to believe that one step further and start your therapy with me.
Rising Lotus Counseling is a small group therapy practice providing therapy virtually across New York State. Our focus is to support and strengthen members of our community by giving them high quality mental health treatment. We regularly work with young adults navigating school, relationships, the workplace, and discovering their identity. Clients also work with us when they are struggling with stress, trauma in their past or present, ADHD and distress with functioning, anxiety, depression and more.
I come to this work from a place of deep respect for each individual’s story and path. I believe in creating an inclusive, welcoming space where you will feel comfortable exploring both your strengths and your challenges. I have a collaborative approach and value being direct, supportive, responsive to feedback. I have a background in Women’s Studies and literature and creative writing and may incorporate creative and expressive activities such as storytelling and reading other people’s stories as part of our work. I have experience working with a range of issues and populations (see below). I am passionate about women’s and LGBTQI issues and have extensive experience working with gender expansive and transgender individuals along the gender continuum. Fundamentally, I believe the relationship between an individual and his/her/their therapist matters much more than the specific techniques employed. My primary focus early in therapy is developing a relationship where my clients trust me and feel comfortable. I work with individuals in an open and honest dialogue and help individuals increase resiliency and coping skills through identifying their strengths. Primarily I provide individual counseling on a weekly basis. Many clients will be able to work through a particular issue or issues in a brief time, but I am also able to work with clients over a longer span of time.
From the very beginning, with sensitivity and compassion, I strive to create a safe and nonjudgmental space in which you can express thoughts, feelings, dreams, and desires that you may feel unable to share elsewhere. I believe that constructive change occurs when we work collaboratively to develop insight into your current struggles; only then can we find ways to help you move forward. I have experience and interest in working with people with anxiety, trauma histories, and relationship issues. I enjoy working with creative people and those who wish to explore various aspects of their identities, including people who are LGBTQ+. Another of my strengths is in helping young people navigate the transition into adulthood. I have been practicing for more than ten years and I have specific training in psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, and existentially oriented psychotherapy.
The ancient rationale for psychotherapy in three quotations: 1) ''He who cannot describe the problem will never find the solution to the problem'' - Confucious (551-479 BCE); 2) ''The unexamined life is not livable for a human being'' (paraphrased as, ''The unexamined life is not worth living'') - Socrates, in Plato's ''Apology'' (ca 360 BCE); 3) ''Whatever anguish of spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to provide for it.'' - Patrick Henry (1739-1799)
I am passionate about providing a warm and supportive space for us to work together to help you feel better quickly. I work with young adults struggling with depression and anxiety. Through the TEAM-CBT approach I will first listen to your story and then develop a plan for recovery. I will teach you specific strategies that you can utilize to work through your struggle. We will track your progress at each session and make meaningful progress towards your goals. You will learn tools to challenge your negative self-talk and can experience relief in just a few weeks.

Hi! I work best with clients who are figuring out who they are, where they belong, and how to navigate stress, relationships, and big life changes. Many of the people I support come from multicultural, multiracial, Indigenous, LGBTQIA+, or immigrant backgrounds, and are looking for a space where all parts of their identity are understood and respected. You might be dealing with anxiety, family pressure, identity questions, or feeling overwhelmed balancing everything. Some clients I work with are also navigating the impact of immigration experiences, acculturation stress, or racial trauma, whether from personal experiences, family history, or systemic challenges. These experiences can shape how you see yourself and move through the world, and you do not have to process them alone. You do not have to have it all figured out. Therapy can be a place to slow down, make sense of your experiences, and find ways to move forward that feel right for you. In sessions, we will look at both the deeper parts of your story and practical tools to help you feel better day to day. I often use a mix of approaches, including exploring patterns from your past, building coping strategies, and working on how your thoughts and feelings connect. My style is warm, collaborative, and grounded in respect for your lived experience. I aim to create a space where you feel safe being fully yourself, no pressure, no judgment, just support as you grow, heal, and navigate this stage of life.
