When we struggle, we might notice we get stuck in thoughts, behaviors, relationships, and patterns we recognize are not helping us, but we don’t know how to stop or change these patterns. No worries, we have all been there! We will explore how these patterns have served you to this point, what barriers are keeping you feeling stuck, and figure out what changes you want to make to live the life that is meaningful to you! You will be able to implement effective tools to feel more centered and work towards your goals with more confidence. We will use a few different talk therapy approaches to help individualize the therapeutic experience to your needs and help you accomplish your goals. There are so many effective tools/ skills out there that can help you feel empowered, grounded and engaged in meaningful ways. Let’s work together and identify what feels best for you.
My primary focus is providing honest communication with patients and quality resources for all those involved.
Having worked at Cornell University’s Counseling & Psychological Services for a number of years, I understand the stressors and challenges that graduate students, post-docs, and professors face. My name is Susan Baker-Carr and for more than 15 years I've worked with people from Cornell and the surrounding community in my solo practice. One of my specialty areas is helping adults diagnosed with ADHD navigate academia and their relationships in order to create a healthy work-life balance. I offer a highly personalized approach to help you meet your goals and achieve the results you seek. In a therapeutic alliance I’ll assist you to decrease your stress and restore and sustain your well-being in all aspects of your life. People I’ve worked with say I’m am effective, caring, and committed therapist who’s helped them reach their goals. It takes courage and strength to ask for help. Please don’t hesitate to contact me today!
My approach is influenced by C.G. Jung, Viktor Frankl (Man's Search for Meaning) Socratic dialogue, Buddhism and Quaker meetings. I work best with the person who sees their life as a journey of self-discovery. I will help you uncover the solutions that you already have and see the problematics of those solutions. I will help you listen to your muse, interpret your dreams, identify your interpersonal patterns and face the fears and anxieties that haunt you. I will treat your troubles with the utmost respect because they help you learn and grow. Gratitude softens pain. I find parallels between creativity & spiritual inspiration.

I work with you to not just understand what's going on, but also to develop tools to help. Tools to stop panic attacks, tools to manage depression, tools to get organized and figure out what you want in life. We work together to see what works reliably for you. In addition to talking things through, in session and between sessions sometimes you might be writing, sometimes trying a challenging behavior change, sometimes engaging in mindfulness, and sometimes using visualizations. My aim is for you to feel better, and to know what to do to keep feeling better or help yourself if problems resurface. And I try to work efficiently with you, so you are back to your life (and ending therapy) as soon as makes sense for you. Give me a call to set up an initial (free) conversation, at 303-870-9195.
Welcome. I am an licensed psychologist with a decade of experience helping students and young adults to navigate transitions and effectively manage mental health. My approach is warm and practical, providing evidence-based care tailored to your individual needs and goals. Regardless of what brings you to therapy, you will receive an opportunity to speak and understand your experiences in a new light. And we will work together to find paths towards a more fulfilling life. For those interested in the details of my approach, I primarily utilize Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), including more specific CBT-based treatments (e.g. Exposure and Response Prevention for OCD and various evidence-based treatments for PTSD). In addition to therapy, I also provide a variety of assessment services, including diagnostic clarification and psychoeducational assessment, including diagnosis of ADHD. Please reach out for a free consultation call if you think my practice might be a fit for your needs.
I am a New York–based Licensed Mental Health Counselor who works with college students and young adults navigating anxiety, stress, emotional overwhelm, adjustment concerns, and life transitions. Many of the students I work with are high-achieving and capable, yet feel stuck in their heads, unsure of themselves, or emotionally reactive under pressure. Therapy can be a space to slow things down, make sense of what’s going on, and learn how to respond rather than just react. My approach is collaborative, practical, and grounded. I combine insight-oriented therapy with skills-based strategies such as emotion regulation, mindfulness, and anxiety management tools that can be used in real-life situations—academics, relationships, family dynamics, and identity development. I tailor therapy to each student’s individual needs, goals, and pace, with attention to how stress and life experiences impact emotional well-being. Before becoming a therapist, I worked in other high-pressure environments, including Division I collegiate athletics and business settings, which informs my understanding of performance stress, identity shifts, and transition periods. In early sessions, my focus is on getting to know you, helping you feel understood, and offering feedback and tools you can apply outside of sessions. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or simply looking for clarity, therapy is a collaborative process, and I look forward to working with you.

It is both normal for us humans to get stuck, scared, or in our own way and also to need space and support to understand the cause of our struggles, face our fears, make changes, and grow. My goal as a therapist is to use our combined wisdom (your knowledge of yourself and your life, my experience and expertise), and sometimes that of my therapy dog Bella, to explore your concerns, increase awareness, insight, and self-compassion, identify options for change, and understand and respect what you choose to do as a result of this process. I have over 20 years experience as a psychotherapist and specifically working with university students (and staff), international persons, and musicians/performers.
Hello, and thank you for taking the time to connect! You likely wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t struggling with the pressures of life, and the demands placed upon you from both internal and external sources. I would like to take the time to acknowledge that where you are in your journey to find help is challenging and I am here to make that process as smooth as I am able. The first thing to know about me is that I attempt to live my life in an authentic manner that honors my truth, self-identity, and worldview; while helping others discover what that may look like for them. Some of the roles I fill in my life are husband, father, son, sibling, friend, mentor, and helper. While each of these roles is unique and requires special attention, they each contribute to my passion in life and therapeutic approach. I began my journey to becoming a therapist almost a decade ago, when I realized my previous career in healthcare management was not aligned with my passions and purpose in life. I found myself running businesses for other people who were focused on profits and growth, but lacking a focus on people and connection, which is where my heart finds fulfillment. It was then I decided to change my career path and further my knowledge in the human experience. With the goal of learning how to connect with others in a meaningful way that can lead to growth and healing, I pursued my education and licensure as a clinical mental health counselor. Through a person centered approach, which employs a wide variety of evidence based interventions, I work with my clients to achieve their goals in a way that fits them individually. I believe that every person is unique and can benefit from unconditional acceptance and compassion. By creating this environment of acceptance, we are able to identify areas that you want to change and implement strategies tailored to your experience. I look forward to meeting you and having the opportunity to help you along your journey. Contact information: jwhitlock@truedirectionmhc.com or Phone: 845-264-2477
