Therapists for college students near Duke University
Let me put it simply: being a college student is hard. There are more expectations than ever placed on young adults today and it's a time of tremendous change, transition, and instability. Emotions are a normal part of being human, but sometimes those emotions seem so overwhelming that you might start to feel out of control and alone. It can feel as though no one understands you and no one is really on your side. It might even feel as though your friendships or other relationships are more stressful than they are helpful. That's where I come in. My goal is to provide a safe, stable space and support for you to navigate all of the difficult relationships, changes, and challenges you're experiencing during this time in life. You are not alone!
There may come a time in life when you lose a person or pet and you recognize that the term, "My heart is broken" means so much more than emotional pain...it's a physical pain as well. You are lost, scared, lonely, and your world has been turned upside down. I can help. Maybe you have lost yourself in alcohol or drug abuse or wonder if you are drinking or using too much. You aren't a bad person but you are embarrassed or ashamed to discuss your alcohol or drug use. Let me help guide you back to the path that was meant for you. You have served your city, county, state, or country as a First Responder or Military member, but sometimes you struggle to feel your very best. Many people can't relate to what you've experienced or even done. At times, you may become stuck in your thoughts, memories, and experiences. Having been in Law Enforcement, I understand the typcial dark sense of humor often used that most people don't understand. I also recognize the need to focus on the task and I will work along side of you to resolve concerns as efficiently as possible. I also work well with those who experience anxiety/panic attacks, symptoms associated with ADHD, describe themselves as "perfectionists", and parents who seek parenting assistance. I am a survivor of suicide loss and frequently support others who have also experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide. I also work closely with the LGBTQIA+ community. I view each person and situation as unique. I am here to create a safe place for you to explore and process your feelings and experiences for which you are seeking services. I am not your “stereotypical” therapist. We can pray together, cuss like sailors, cry together, or share a good laugh. I believe that the use of appropriate self-disclosure can also strengthen the bond between the therapist and client. I am caring and compassionate, but I am also direct and will push you to confront what is holding you back from living your best life. It takes courage to ask for help, and I am beyond grateful to be the one to walk beside you in your journey of healing. I graduated from East Carolina, in 2000, with dual Masters Degrees: 1) Rehabilitation Counseling (vocational, emotional, physical, and behavioral concerns), and 2) Substance Abuse and Clinical Counseling. I started my career as an Addictions and Dual Diagnosis Therapist. After approximately 5 years as a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC), I started working with and advocating for families involved in the Juvenile Justice system. Nearly 16 years later, I decided to return to the counseling profession. Since returning, I have worked in a group setting as well as having opened my own private practice. I am currently seeing clients in person and via telehealth. I have available appointments throughout the week. No weekend appointments are available at this time.

Are you navigating modern motherhood, and work-life "balance" (is there EVER really complete balance)? Does making friends feel like a chore? Maybe it's ADHD, anxiety, or postpartum? Is perimenopause knocking at the door? Let's figure it out together. I am kind, but direct in my approach. Please understand that I no longer conduct phone consultations. I believe that the best way to truly decide if we are a good fit working together, is to meet and go from there. My approach to working with clients is that the client is always the expert on their own lives. I see clients from a strengths-based perspective, and help my clients recognize and use those strengths fully. I take an integrative approach to meet your needs. I am a psychodynamic therapist, but I make use of polyvagal theory and mindfulness as well. I know it can be overwhelming to reach out for help when you need it the most. It takes bravery to take this next step. Be proud of yourself for being here right now. I typically respond within two business days. Check your spam folder to be sure you didn't miss it. You're both reflective, and self-critical, constantly trying to prove yourself. The strive for perfection, and loud inner critic leave you feeling exhausted both physically and emotionally. You want to feel better, but don't know where to begin... Whether you're navigating anxiety, processing trauma, or you’re exploring your relationship with food and/or your body, I want you to know things can get better. My work focuses on empowering college aged and younger adult women as they begin to connect with who they are, clarify what is important to them, and cultivate a life where they feel fulfilled, connected, and energized. My approach is warm, relational, trauma informed, and direct. I use humor when appropriate, and encourage my clients to show up authentically. I integrate somatic (body) based interventions like gentle movement, breathwork, and ifs-parts work with cognitive approaches to help you better identify, understand, and work through your thoughts and feelings. My passion is helping women explore and improve their relationships with food, their bodies, and ultimately, themselves. Together we can explore the deep rooted narratives you hold, and work on building a new story that feels both empowering and tangible. I strongly believe we heal through safe connection, so if you're ready and willing, let's connect!

My name is Chaney, and I am a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I am passionate about helping people improve their mental health and overcome the obstacles that they face. I work with children, adolescents, and adults. I am affirming to LGBTQ+ and neurodiverse folks. I also have special training and interest in helping folks with diabetes cope with diabetes distress and burnout. It is my belief that this journey to mental wellness is a partnership, and I look forward to finding unique solutions for each person I meet. I help folks achieve their health goals by prescribing medications, recommending lifestyle changes, and providing supportive talk therapy to develop coping skills. I want to work with you to find the best solution to fit your circumstances and needs. I look forward to meeting you and hearing your story. We each have challenges to overcome and at times need a helping hand to do it. It can be hard to acknowledge that something is wrong, much less that you might need help. So, rest assured that I will be glad to team up with you on the path to wellness.
