Hello! Are you finding that college isn't quite what you thought it would be? I get it...it's a tough transition and a steep learning curve. Anxiety, homesickness, some grief, comparison, high expectations, new ways of communicating, living on your own, conflict with roommates, and that might only describe the first semester! There are then decisions to make about your interests, to study abroad or not, where to intern, what organizations and extracurriculars to get involved in, feeling too stretched for time and unable to manage all responsibilities well, the stress of a job or your athletic demands. You don't have to navigate this alone––I can help! I specialize in helping students navigate these issues and more through a lens of self-compassion, skill-building, and a sense of empowerment. These issues are not unique to you and you can learn to build resilience and tools that will help you now and in your future.

Hi I'm Alison Cross! I am a psychotherapist, and I provide both in person and virtual services in Georgia and North Carolina. It’s important to have an idea of what feels like the right fit when you’re looking for a qualified person to talk to. The problem is, how do you know? So here's what it looks like with me. When my client leaves our session, my goal is for them to feel heard and respected. I want my clients to feel like they’re talking to a real person. How else can trust be built? My style has been described as 'down to earth, gentle, and encouraging.' I also have a great sense of humor that comes in only when appropriate. I view therapy as a safety net for the various issues clients bring. I will collaborate with you from the very first session on goals for your time. Some people I work with prefer to set the agenda for our time together, with just a few interjections from me. Understanding the big picture and getting to the heart of the matter are things I'm good at. I have also completed the Level 1 training in Internal Family Systems and Level 1 training in the Embodied Reocvery Model. I love using these models because they are beautifully client focused. My goal is to develop a positive therapeutic relationship with you. When that happens, hope is tangible and the spirit opens to new life and new beginnings. All sessions with me will be virtual unless I'm in Atlanta and we can coordinate an in person session.

In the session, Courtney's goal is to provide a warm and nurturing environment where clients can begin to approach issues or situations with curiosity, work to find insight, and create sustainable solutions to life struggles. Courtney believes strongly in providing copious amounts of empathy and gentle pushing towards cultivating more compassion for yourself. At her core, she is a person-centered therapist and her space reflects that. She will be authentic and genuine in session and hopes her clients feel safe doing the same. She always considers the biopsychosocial model when treating mental health concerns and utilizes techniques from cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance, and commitment therapy, and shares an understanding of polyvagal theory with clients. Courtney received her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and her master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where she also pursued a certificate in play therapy. Over the past decade, she has spent time working in public and private schools and within families to support the healthy growth and development of children and family systems. Because of this, Courtney specializes in working with children and parents. She enjoys empowering parents through positive parenting skills and utilizes play therapy to address childhood mental health struggles. She is also certified to hold Child-Parent Relationship Therapy classes, which brings the skills of play therapy into the hands of the parent and into their home. Additionally, Courtney is extremely passionate about being a neurodivergent affirming therapist for all ages and enjoys examining systems or "rules" that exist but don't serve the individual. She also enjoys working with adults on getting in touch with their playful side - whether that be playing with sand or fidgets while in session, or working to create space in their lives for hobbies outside of session. In her counseling sessions, Courtney enthusiastically listens to her clients and believes an equal and collaborative relationship to be crucial in eliciting change. She believes that every individual holds the power within themselves to work through life’s turbulence and upset. Her role is to help her clients uncover this power while also working to acquire the skills and strategies that will aid them in achieving their goals. The sacred nature of therapy is not lost on Courtney, and she holds the relationship highly. She is honored to be part of someone's life journey. One of Courtney’s favorite quotes comes from Mr. Fred Rogers, “There is no normal life that is free of pain. The very wrestling with our problems can be the impetus for our growth.”

"I feel broken and I'm pissed about it." You were independent, high achieving, organized. Then you got the medical diagnosis, and everything changed. If you have been through a stressful or traumatic medical illness, you know firsthand the challenges of building a care team that you trust and coming into a new relationship with your body. My role is to partner with you as you face these challenges. If you are caregiving for individuals as they move through physical changes, it can be difficult to find balance. I can help you find your footing as you navigate caring for self and other, face difficult medical decisions, or move through anticipatory grief in the context of potentially complex relationship dynamics. "I just want to get back to normal." "What does it even mean to 'live with' this? How can they say that?" "This is happening on top of everything else! I don't have time to slow down, I'm in pain, and I can't sleep." "I had trauma before. This just makes dealing with it harder." These thoughts and reactions are not uncommon. Individualized, trauma-informed psychotherapy can help. To learn more, please reach out for a free phone consultation. I am happy to address any questions or concerns you may have prior to initiating therapy, and I look forward to meeting you soon.

Hello! At Discovery Counseling, I approach counseling from an individual perspective. I believe everyone is in the process of discovering themselves. I come alongside you in this process to support and act as a guide. I believe you are the expert on you. I help to assess your strengths and areas of growth then develop a plan to use those to improve your life. I enjoy working with individuals who want to find out who they are and where they want to go. I specialize in working with people going through major life transitions, desire to have a stronger sense of identity, and asking serious questions about their view of life. Because of this, I specialize in working with those who are in the LGBTQ+ community, Gen Z and Millennials, and those impacted by major changes such as moving away from home, divorce, job changes, and more. Further, I work closely with those going through spiritual questioning, no matter their faith. Overall, I am looking to work with anyone who desires to develop a better sense of who they are and where they want to go. I look forward to hearing from you and help you discover yourself.

Have you been feeling overwhelmed, unworthy, misunderstood? Do you find yourself questioning what’s next? Perhaps it feels like something is off course or missing from your life. We all go through periods of uncertainty and doubt, and sometimes we need help finding our way through. I offer a safe place to work through mental health and life issues. While I'm an expert on mental health I view you as the expert on you. We will combine our expertise to meet your goals. I'm a mental health counselor who guilds clients towards productive thinking, effective emotion regulation, and assertive communication. This will entail more than talking. Life is about action and so is therapy! I treat the whole person, using an eclectic approach rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I believe all dimensions of our health interconnect to form a complete picture. Whatever we do to our body affects our mind and our spirit. A similar relationship exists between our thoughts, emotions, and actions. A meaningful change in one of these areas will affect the others. This reciprocal relationship between our thoughts, emotions and actions is known as the cognitive triad. Example: Imagine you’re anxious about speaking in front of the class tomorrow. o You’re probably telling yourself all the reasons you can’t do it. That negative self-talk leads to anxiety and feelings of worthlessness. o As a result, you are actually more likely to perform poorly. o What if you talked to yourself differently? o Try encouraging yourself...listing all the reasons you can do it! o Your anxiety will likely decrease. Instead of feeling worthless, you’ll probably feel prepared and ready to present! o If you enter the classroom with the mindset that you can do it, then you’re actually more likely to succeed! I've been a counselor for over 8 years. Why did I become a counselor? Simple. I want to help people heal. I remember that feeling of helplessness as I watched people suffer throughout my childhood. I knew that when I grew up, I needed to do something to help. Accepting the call to become a counselor is the best decision I’ve ever made! As a counselor I am able to help others walk through life's challenges without feeling overcome by them. I began counseling clients of all ages in 2016. I transitioned to remote/telehealth counseling in 2020, and this year I launched my private practice. I currently counsel teens (ages 13-17), adults (18-100) and couples.
