Therapists for college students near Harvard University
Hello! I’m Katherine. Therapy is a chance to have someone outside of your daily life help you process and navigate your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. I aim to create a warm, welcoming space where you can openly discuss even the toughest parts of your life. I have experience in many areas, but I especially love working with life transitions and changes, relationship dynamics, and self-discovery. As a woman of color, I’m also passionate about addressing racial identity issues and breaking unhealthy patterns with other BIPOC individuals. My goal is to help you find your voice and create a life that feels best for you. In our work together, I hope you not only find solutions to whatever brought you to therapy but also learn more about yourself and how you want your life to be. We’ll go at your pace, with you taking the lead. After all, this is your story. If this sounds like what you’re looking for in therapy, I’d love to start working with you!
I specialize in working with teens and young adults. I have a strong background in cognitive behavioral therapy but tend to take a more eclectic and collaborative approach in order to tailor the therapy experience to each specific client’s needs and goals. I am here to offer a safe space that is filled with genuine compassion and empathy. It is my goal that you always feel seen and heard in the therapy room. Together, we can discover what it is that you need in order to cope with difficult experiences, heal from past or present trauma, and grow into exactly the person you want to be.
I enjoy working with students who need support in adjusting to all the changes that school inherently comes with leaving home, performance anxiety, finding your people, dating, friends, study habits, getting ready to graduate and finding your next move etc. And through all of this, sometimes there is anxiety, depression, or trauma that makes all of the adjustments more difficult. Therapy can help you sort through all of that so that you have a clear mind and feel more at ease in life. Reach out to me today to schedule a free 15 minute consult to see if we are a match, it's important that you feel a connection with your therapist. Feel free to e-mail me at katieobrienlicsw@gmail.com to get things started. Visit my website or my psychology today profile for more information as well.

I use a strength-based, non-judgmental approach, utilizing elements from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and solution-focused therapy to help people recognize their strengths, explore their barriers, and navigate life's challenges
College is an exciting time though it can be an overwhelming one as well. College comes with its own unique set of challenges - increased workload, the need for greater time management, increased independence, and trying to find a good work-life balance, to name a few. College life can bring on new anxiety or exacerbate pre-existing anxiety, and managing this and coping in healthy and effective ways can prove difficult at times. Anxiety and stress can also trigger new or worsen pre-existing Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), like excoriation disorder (skin picking) and trichotillomania (hair pulling). If you are a female student struggling with anxiety and need help managing it, and/or are having a difficult time with BFRBs, I would love to work with you. Together we will work on identifying stressors/triggers as well as strategies and skills you can use to better manage your anxiety and/or your BFRB. I look forward to meeting you!
Sometimes the stress associated with being in school, learning who you are, developing relationships, and generally navigating college life can lead to feelings and experiences that are very difficult to navigate alone. Even the adjustment to college can be very challenging, and sometimes old patterns that you thought you left behind can start revealing themselves again. Perhaps new patterns are concerning you. It's okay to reach out for help. Feeling better is truly possible, even when it feels like it might not be, or that you don't really need help. You don’t have to live in pain, pretend that it’s all okay, or manage alone. Together we can find a way to more ease, love, understanding, and acceptance. The journey to self-love, healing and wholeness is full of discovery, and requires a trusting, therapeutic relationship. Finding a skilled therapist, who is a good fit for you is essential. If you think I might be a good fit for you, let's connect.

I became a therapist to bring my passion for helping others into a space where you can feel truly comfortable, supported, and understood. My goal is not just to create that feeling within our sessions, but to help you carry it into your life and relationships. When we work together, you’ll find me walking alongside you, offering guidance and support as we explore what empowers you and helps you feel more confident in who you are. I’m here to encourage you, celebrate your progress, and help you build a stronger, more authentic connection with yourself and the world around you.

College life can be exciting—and overwhelming. Whether you’re navigating academic stress, anxiety, imposter syndrome, relationship challenges, cultural or family pressures, or questions about your identity, therapy can be a space to sort through it all with support and intention. Together, we’ll work on building emotional clarity, self-compassion, and practical coping skills so you can feel more grounded and confident—on and off campus. Providing online mental health services to Massachusetts and Vermont residents (18+) facing the challenges of college life and emerging adulthood. College presents both opportunities and challenges as you take up your life as an adult in the world. To help you meet those challenges, the Austen Riggs Center provides an online Intensive Outpatient Program. Our program delivers psychodynamic psychotherapy, medication management, and a combination of process groups, yoga, and coping skills to students whose struggles interfere with meeting the academic, social, and emotional challenges of higher education.
Greetings, I am an 11 year Marine Corps veteran (2003 to 2014), experienced in working with anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use disorders. My main approach is person centered with a spattering of CBT, ACT, and REBT. Feel free to chat with me a bit and see if we work well together. I completed my master's in mental health counseling at Cambridge College in 2022, worked in a psychiatric hospital in a dual diagnosis role from 2022 to 2023, and moved on to community mental health where I worked as an outpatient clinician from 2023 to 2024, earning my licensure in December of that year.
I view the therapeutic relationship as similar to canoeing - it requires you to provide the steering, while I supply the momentum, and motivation and commitment from both of us to get to the destination. In our work together, I believe in giving you space to explore your story, as it was, as it is, as you want it to be, in a safe, supportive, empowering way that will, in time, allow you to feel confident and secure within your mind, body, and relationships. Within my practice, I utilize eco-therapy as a means to build an objective, curious, and comfortable relationship with the physical world around us, in order to practice building that same relationship within ourselves and with the people around us. It can feel so easy to get swept up in judgemental, shame-based thoughts, creating false perceptions, emotional pain and isolation. And yet, in the same way we prepare for cold winter nights or sweltering summer heat, so too can we weather the storms of our social and emotional worlds. To orient our work towards achieving your therapeutic goals, I work with Internal Family Systems, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, existential therapy, somatic therapy, animal therapy, ecotherapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, CBT and mindfulness practices. Utilizing this interdisciplinary blend we can identify and work through the obstacles to then find ways to move forward and love yourself into creating your ideal reality. I accept individuals, couples and families of all genders, identities, religions, and backgrounds. With a client-centered approach I believe you are the greatest expert of your own life, and in order to effectively row this canoe I ask for trust, honesty, commitment, curiosity, and engagement, so I, in return, will provide compassion, patience, knowledge, and reflection.
My approach is warm, energetic, and client-centered. I believe that no two clients are the same, so therapy should never be one-size-fits-all. I strive to tailor each session to the individual, meeting clients where they are and focusing on what they need in that moment. Together, we create an approach that reflects each client's goals, readiness for change, and unique strengths to move forward and gain confidence.
Are you feeling overwhelmed or stressed? You don't have to face challenges alone. I offer compassionate support to help you grow to who you want to be. My experience as a therapist includes working with students at Cornell University on a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, academic and career stressors, perfectionism, relationships, addiction/recovery, grief and loss, and trauma/PTSD. I offer cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including DBT for emotional regulation, and EMDR for trauma and PTSD. My practice is via telehealth in NY, MA, and ME, and I have appointments available now. Please call or email me for a free 20-minute consultation to see if we are a good fit (no texts). I hope to speak with you soon!
Having the ability to express yourself freely and without judgment is an essential part of therapy, and the relationship between client and therapist is a key aspect of this. As a social worker, I recognize the importance of human relationships and the environment we live in, as well as the negative impact they have on our ability to function. I utilize a person-centered, strengths based approach to understand individuals as a whole, and work collaboratively with clients to address their challenges and reach their goals. I provide individual therapy focusing on anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Identifying as a nonbinary lesbian myself, I understand how difficult it is to find a competent provider with whom you feel safe and understood. If you’ve made it this far, I encourage you to take the next step and reach out so we can see if this would be a good fit for both of us.
My therapeutic approach centers around establishing a trusting and collaborative environment for clients to navigate their challenges. I am dedicated to providing a warm, inviting, and non-judgmental space, empowering individuals to confront obstacles and find peace and balance in their lives. I have experience working with adults coping with life stressors, adjustment to parenthood, recent medical diagnoses, anxiety, depression, OCD and trauma. My clinical training includes work in hospital settings, addiction research, and outpatient work. I have completed the International OCD Foundation's BTTI training for use of ERP with OCD diagnoses.
