Therapists for college students near Cambridge, MA
Having spent part of my life in Europe and Africa, my background helps me work with a diverse range of clients - from college students and veterans to corporate employees and expats. I am a clinical psychologist and cultural psychologist (Rutgers, PsyD; Harvard, BA) with 19 years of experience providing psychotherapy to adults. My specialties include depression, trauma, and anxiety as well as stress, life transitions, cultural adjustment, and relationship issues. I am a caring, interactive therapist and use an integrative approach (ACT, CBT, psychodynamic, and mindfulness techniques) to provide you with a safe space to heal and practice new tools as you reset your life compass. I see therapy as a gift to yourself: making time to build knowledge, awareness, and compassion, try new behaviors, and improve your quality of life. Change is possible at any age if there is courage, flexibility, willingness, and action. I also believe that a variety of things can help us heal and enrich our lives (e.g. music, sports, nature, friendships). I look forward to starting this chapter of compassion, healing, and growth with you and invite you to schedule a free consultation today.

I believe that therapy is a journey that takes place in a safe and collaborative space between therapist and client. Within that space, I use a warm, supportive, curious and empathic approach to guide our work as we look at current and past stressors that may be causing you to feel "stuck" in various aspects of your life. Together, we can work to identify your inner strengths and resources that will aid you in managing current stressors, work through past events, and move towards health and healing. Specializations include: PTSD/Complex PTSD, Anxiety/Stress, Dissociation, Attachment, Sexual Assault/Abuse, and relationship/adjustment challenges. I use an eclectic therapeutic approach that is geared towards meeting my clients' individual needs and is aimed at promoting growth, clarity, and overall well being. I have had training in the most advanced treatment of anxiety, stress and trauma including EMDR, Sensorimotor/body-based therapies, and attachment-based psychotherapies. I remain up-to-date with the most effective therapies to aid my clients in developing tools and skills to meet the challenges of everyday life. I understand that finding the right therapeutic fit is a process and appreciate the strength and courage it takes to reach out for support. If you are reading this, then you are looking for some help. I got you. Mind Matters Therapeutics is my brain child (see what I did there?). I taught for a decade, then I decided to go back to school to practice medicine. Best decision I ever made. The best part of all this? I know the ups, downs, inside-outs, stressors, and joys of being a student. I know the demands of college coursework. I have expertise in advocating for young adults in the educational setting regardless of the individual concern: Are you looking for continuation of care? I will pick up where your hometown doc left off. Keep you going strong. Are you looking for academic accommodations and advocacy? I will fight for you. And my paperwork is exceptional. Are you looking for someone to talk to? I specialize in trauma-focused therapy and OCD/anxiety type therapy. I can see you as much as you need to be seen, no limitations. Are you in need of just figuring it all out? My initial assessments are thorough; I leave no stone unturned. I take the time to listen to you. Always. You’re the captain of the ship, and you’re in control of your care. We will figure out the root issues at the jump. I got you. I will never dismiss you. I will be available to you. I will respond to your questions, needs, concerns, etc. in a timely way. I am on your team, I work for you. I sincerely care. I do this for my soul, not my pocket. I’d love to help. P.S. Don’t sweat the insurance. I know how to work with in and out-of-network insurance. My students pay little (if anything) to see me. Honest. Best, Des O’Doherty Mind Matters Therapeutics
Welcome. My name is Kate, and I offer psychodynamically oriented, trauma-informed, compassionate, and affirming therapy to folks of all kinds. I work with people across the lifespan, many of whom identify as queer and/or neurodivergent and are trying to make sense of a world that can feel overwhelming. Some are living with long-term stress, trauma, anxiety, or depression, while others are seeking support with life transitions, relationships, or family dynamics. I also offer clinical supervision. Clients often value working with me when they feel ready to explore their inner world more deeply—to better understand the hopes and fears beneath relational and behavioral patterns that increase suffering. I also regularly offer skills-based techniques, drawing from DBT, to help with in-the-moment management of distress and emotional overwhelm. I believe that a strong therapeutic relationship is fundamental to a successful experience. My hope is to provide every client with a safe, supportive space to explore, learn more about themselves, feel truly seen, heard and accepted, build new skills, grow, and reconnect with who they really are. I look forward to connecting with you.

There are times in life when our usual coping strategies and support systems are not enough and it takes courage to seek help during times of pain and uncertainty. Navigating college and graduate school in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, racial inequities and tension, and the current political climate can certainly be one of these times and you don’t have to navigate it alone. Therapy can provide a safe space for support, learning, and meaningful change. I am a licensed psychologist who specializes in evidence-based treatments for adolescents and young adults who are seeking support to manage mood, anxiety, college mental health, life transitions, grief, motivation, sleep, and family concerns. I also specialize in working with family members or loved ones of individuals who have a diagnosis of serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. I am passionate about working with college and graduate students and have extensive experience and training working within the context of college mental health. My therapeutic style is warm, active, compassionate, and collaborative. I use a strengths-based approach and draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other evidence-based approaches to tailor treatment to the specific values, strengths, and goals of my clients. I utilize these approaches to help clients create a toolbox of coping skills and develop a deeper understanding of themselves. Every person has a unique identity, story, and experience, and deserves personalize therapy to fit their identities and strengths. My priority is to create a space where every client feels safe discussing painful thoughts and feelings, and supported as they work toward creating meaningful change in their lives. I applaud you for taking the first step in finding a therapist. I encourage you to reach out to me if you think I may be a good fit for you.

I am accepting new clients! I believe in the power of therapy to help people connect with inner wisdom, explore and build upon strengths, and process difficulties in a supportive and non-judgmental space. I view the therapeutic relationship as being fundamental to growth and change, as it lays the groundwork for you to work through vulnerable feelings and explore relational patterns. I try to foster this relationship by connecting on a human level and providing an atmosphere of care, acceptance, openness, curiosity, and humility. OFFERING VIRTUAL APPOINTMENTS... Sometimes the roads we chose to traverse become less easy to navigate as situations change, circumstances reach beyond our control, or life simply needs some readjusting to get back on track. I strive to provide individual clients and couples with a vehicle to discover the answers that they seek about themselves and their relationships. I help clients learn the tools they need to navigate the road on their own, and find the healing that they desire. My goal as a therapist is to foster a genuine and welcoming environment that facilitates a safe space for clients to experience personal growth and positive change. I work with adults, college age students, and their families. I specialize in relationship issues, depression, anxiety, and life transitions.
I believe entering into a therapeutic relationship shows a desire to grow and learn during a time that may be difficult. Luckily, this is where the possibility for unlocking potential and true growth begins. At our practice, we strive to foster an environment where people feel safe, comfortable and open towards being challenged, allowing them to persevere and achieve.
The pace of our daily lives seems only to be increasing in speed, and our ongoing hustle to keep up on a daily basis has only diminished our ability to slow down when we want to. My approach focuses on helping my clients address issues with anxiety, depression, video game addiction, and motivation. I utilize a psychodynamic and relational approach to learn and reflect with my clients to help them gain a deeper understanding of themselves. From there I utilize a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and mindfulness based techniques to help build the skills necessary to achieve their desired outcomes.
