I bring over 25 years of experience supporting young adults through major life transitions, mental health challenges, and the everyday complexities of college life. For nearly two decades, I’ve worked at Boston College as an Associate Dean and instructor, helping students navigate academic pressure, identity development, and moments of uncertainty with compassion and clarity. I also understand the university system deeply, which allows me to help students who are coping with mental health challenges access campus supports while we work together on their therapeutic goals. My clinical work is grounded in evidence‑based, trauma‑informed approaches and a strong belief in students’ resilience. Sessions are thoughtful, personalized, and goal oriented. In our work together, I will create a space where you can understand what you’re experiencing, build on your strengths, and move through college with greater clarity and support.

As a psychologist with a passion for supporting young adults, I’ve had the privilege of working in college mental health settings at institutions like MIT, Tufts, and Boston College. My experience spans all ages, allowing me to connect with people at different life stages. I specialize in LGBTQ psychology and have a strong foundation in women’s and gender issues. I thrive on exploring cultural identities and helping individuals navigate their journeys, whether it’s related to gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, or the challenges of emerging adulthood. I’m also highly skilled in treating anxiety and depression, and I have specialized training in postpartum mental health. My approach is rooted in psychodynamic therapy, viewed through a multicultural lens. I focus on understanding how your unique life experiences and intersecting identities shape your perspective. Together, we’ll create a collaborative relationship that fosters empowerment, builds skills, and promotes lasting change. As a first-generation, bilingual Armenian American woman, I deeply understand how cultural identities influence mental health and experiences of marginalization. I believe this insight is a powerful asset in our work together. Therapy can be a transformative journey, and I’m here to support your growth and healing every step of the way. <script src="https://thrivingcampus.com/verified.js?pid=26568"></script>

It is hard to get in a groove and to recover after the times of solitude, separation, and all things unknown we’ve experienced. You know yourself the best, but everyone needs help, support and help connecting these days. No one has been through this before! If you would like someone to connect with, to talk with about figuring out things that are best for you and your people, feel free to contact me. I am working with individuals in person (mostly) and have flexible hours. No topic is off limits. I would very much look forward to talking with you.

It can feel overwhelming to be proactive about making positive changes in our lives. Everyone has their own complicated life circumstances related to school, family, work, relationships, and mental and spiritual well being. Therapy can be an essential tool to work to un-complicate these circumstances and focus on making happiness and wellness a daily priority. When we feel overwhelmed with worry or that it's impossible to accomplish daily tasks we feel powerless. I have been in this field for over 15 years and can provide a supportive and empathic environment in which we can work together on specific goals and changes for your life. My experience with issues such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse, trauma, and parenting allow me to help you identify obstacles to change and move forward in improving your overall mental health. I am both a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker and a Certified School Social Worker/Adjustment Counselor. Entering therapy can be daunting but I will provide a relaxed atmosphere for you to feel empowered and motivated to make real improvements in your life. I utilize a variety of treatment modalities to ensure that we are working towards the best possible solutions for your specific needs.

Welcome, First of all, be sure to take a deep breath and know that whether you choose to work with me or someone else you will get through this process! Choosing a therapist is not an easy task. I look forward to setting up a time to speak with you after you review my clinical background and training. Most college students appreciate the sense of humor and warmth that I bring to our discussions. They feel connected and engaged with a real person who cares about them in a personal way. They also appreciate my ability to help them identify practical solutions to the academic and emotional issues that they voice in our meetings. My wide range of clinical experiences allow me to help my patients move through treatment with a sense of energy and a feeling that their strengths are both appreciated and enhanced throughout the treatment process. This close relationship allows them to open-up and identify a pathway forward in their life that is meaningful, clear, and solid. To provide you with some background I would note that I am a licensed psychologist who has worked with college students for years. I specialize in treating depression, anxiety, college transition stress, social skill challenges and anger management. I also help students who need specialized support in managing the organizational, writing, or academic demands of a college environment. I meet with students in individual, group, and family therapy sessions depending on the need. I also support students and their families in situations where they are stepping down from a stay in an in-patient hospital or are trying to avoid a hospitalization. My approach to treatment is holistic in that I use a range of time-tested treatment interventions to identify and address your needs in a personalized manner. I would be happy to answer any questions you have about my approach to treatment in our first phone contact. I maintain an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School and serve as a Clinical Associate at McLean Hospital, the medical school's largest teaching psychiatric hospital. I have supervised numerous psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists over the course of my career and as such I am the Director of Training in my group practice, and I am currently training five psychology graduate students. Please feel free to email me at Perna@hms.harvard.edu or call me at 617-431-1441 in order to answer your questions. Good luck with your journey! https://www.copernican.solutions/david-a-perna-phd.html

Maybe it’s hard to name exactly what’s wrong. You may be functioning on the outside while feeling exhausted inside, unsure how to share any of this with the people and systems around you. I share and want to honor these experiences of moving between cultures and languages, carrying expectations, and navigating BIPOC and LGBTQ+ identities. Together, I will work with you to co-create a space where you feel heard and seen, with room to better understand who you are and move toward what you want. My hope is to gently empower you with insights and momentum that extend into your life beyond therapy. As a queer Asian therapist with experience as an international student, I bring understanding of navigating identity, belonging, and multiple worlds into my work. My approach is trauma-informed, relational-cultural, and humanistic, with space for creative exploration of your experiences and relationships. I also integrate CBT and somatic tools when helpful. You don’t have to carry everything alone. If you’re looking for a fellow traveler who can hold your full story, sit with life challenges, and stay alongside you through uncertainty and change, I’m here to walk with you.

Facing challenges can be difficult for all of us. Some seek therapy in moments of crisis; others are motivated by alleviating uncomfortable feelings and thoughts that can include anxiety, depression, sadness, anger, and so on. Still others seek treatment as part of self-discovery. It’s a privilege to support my clients through their courageous journeys of self-understanding that leads to an improved sense of wellbeing, regardless of the challenges they face. In my opinion, strength is not the absence of problems, but rather having the resilience to face them. I am looking to work with young adults who want to be their best selves. With over a decade of experience treating adolescents and families, I have helped numerous individuals and families experiencing symptoms related to depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, social struggles, addictive behaviors, LGBTQ+ concerns, and more. I mindfully adapt my therapeutic approach to the needs of each client. In talking with me, you will find a therapist who is eager to lead with his ear in order to meet you where you are. My style is compassionate, empathic, welcoming, relational, empowering, and probing. I bring a sense of humor and creativity to our sessions. Your unique challenges require a flexible, evidenced-based, and individualized method of support.
