Life doesn't always unfold the way we expect. Whether you're feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, or navigating a major life transition, such as relationship changes, divorce, parenting challenges, or career uncertainty, you don't have to face it alone. I believe therapy should do more than help you understand your struggles; it should help you develop the confidence, skills, and resilience to move forward. Together, we'll create a warm, collaborative space where you feel heard, build on your strengths, and create meaningful, lasting change.
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who values creating a space of agency and collaboration between myself and my clients. I apply evidence-based behavioral therapy approaches to help teens and adults who are struggling with anxiety, OCD, and/or depression. I place a strong emphasis on providing gender/LGBTQ+ affirming, culturally conscious, and sex-positive care. I am committed to creating a safe & inclusive space for clients to be able to show up authentically and feel understood. I aim to empower clients by meeting them where they are at on their journey. I strive to maintain a compassionate therapeutic environment that fosters growth and healing. I provide clients with practical skills and tools they need to reclaim control and find freedom from anxiety.
Past experiences continue to impact us throughout life in ways that we do not always fully understand. Family relationships, environmental stressors, social norms and cultural expectations can also place enormous weight on our shoulders to carry around. As my clients work through grief, sadness, and anger, I am deeply committed to their process. I welcome clients from various backgrounds, and, in addition, I have an ongoing commitment to working with first and second generation immigrants and their families. By allowing space for unprocessed feelings and experiences, my goal is to help my clients find a path to alleviating the intensity of those feelings, leading to improved relationships – with themselves and with the people in their lives. Please reach out over email or phone to schedule an initial consultation call and an in person or virtual meeting.
Emily Hanneman, Christopher Manvel, Emiliana Mladic, Monica Morris, Thia Mathes, Will Bartz and Sarah Mitchell provide psychotherapy services to adolescents, adults and families. They offer telehealth services throughout Illinois and in-office services in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago. They work people across the lifespan, including many young adults navigating college, graduate school, or the transition into the workforce. Please note that we do have therapists who accept regular Illinois Medicaid and Blue Cross Community. Unfortunately we are not in-network with other Medicaid plans including Aetna Better Health, County Care, Meridian, Molina or Youthcare or Medicaid from states other than Illinois.
Welcome. I’m glad you’re here. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of experience helping individuals, couples, and families navigate life’s challenges, relationships, and personal growth. I believe therapy is a collaborative process built on trust, compassion, and a genuine understanding of each person’s unique story. My approach is warm, supportive, and thoughtful while also helping clients identify patterns, develop new skills, and create meaningful change. I work with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, life transitions, grief and loss, perfectionism, self-esteem concerns, and challenges related to family and interpersonal relationships. I believe that people often develop ways of coping that once served an important purpose, and therapy provides a space to better understand those patterns, build on strengths, and move toward a more fulfilling life. My goal is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental environment where you feel heard, understood, and supported. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, facing a transition, or simply wanting to better understand yourself, I would be honored to work with you on your journey toward growth and healing.
I work with young people about to graduate or young career adults who instead of excitement and anticipation, feel frozen. You have done it all right, gotten the degree that is supposed to be "useful" and yet it feels empty. I work with perfectionistic, high achieving students and early career adults who thought their life would look one way at this stage but are finding it is not what you hoped or thought you would feel. Our work untangles perfectionism, comparison and the pressure to be exceptional at all times.
Life’s journey may bring times of challenge, uncertainty, and pain. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, stuck, or powerless at times. Facing these moments alone can make them even harder. In therapy, I hope to collaborate with you to build a compassionate and empathetic relationship where it is safe to be curious, observe, reflect and grow. Together we’ll understand the sources of distress in the context of your identities and experiences, try out different coping skills and identify what works best for you. We will also explore ways to navigate difficult situations in your life to support you in being your most authentic self. As a therapist holding marginalized identities, I’m passionate about working with folks in the immigrant, BIPOC, neurodivergent and LGBTQ+ communities. My training focused on anxiety, depression, trauma, relational concerns, navigating oppression and discrimination, self-esteem, and grief. I enjoy helping clients find ways to live the life they envision. I provide therapy in both English and Mandarin.
Therapeutically, we approach each client differently, and pick our tools according to your needs and preferences. We are looking to help you find acceptance, success, meaning, and/or anything else on your terms, as you define it. We share a commitment to practicing in anti-oppressive, harm reductive, and relational ways, but each clinician has their own eclectic approach. Our clinicians have deep experience working with LGBTQ+ and especially trans/non-binary/gender expansive clients — from childhood through adulthood. As an organization founded by queer folks, we’re here to provide a space where you can feel safe and brave all at once. Our clinicians also focus on chronic illness or disability, and neurodivergence.

They might be struggling with OCD, social anxiety, phobias, trauma, or just the overwhelming pressure to always get things “right.” My clients come from a variety of background and identities. They want relief, but not just a quick fix. They’re looking to better understand themselves, break free from rigid patterns, and move toward a life that feels more connected, meaningful, and aligned.

Whether you are struggling with anxiety, depression, disordered eating, or other issue, we help our clients to recognize underlying problems, fully realize their strengths, and adjust certain behaviors and thoughts to see things in a different, healthier way. Our practice specializes in treating adolescents, college students, and adults of all ages. We pride ourselves in providing evidence-based treatment approaches and borrow heavily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy. We know that all clients have personal strengths. We consider it our job to help our clients get back in touch with them.

College can be exciting — and overwhelming. If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or just not like yourself, you don’t have to figure it all out alone. Ombu Counseling specializes in helping those facing new challenges in life, those in the process of negotiating their place in an adoptive environment, and those seeking to assert themselves in relationships, groups and/or families in which conflicting values, beliefs and expectations prevail. Major life transitions are challenging, especially when they provoke questions about one’s identity, culture, core-values and sense of belonging. Trying to figure this out can result in feelings of confusion and emotional exhaustion. Counseling offers a process for reflecting on such questions and space for containing the emotions they produce.
I have always enjoyed working with children and adolescents, but expanding to teens, young adults, and middle-aged adults has been incredible! I assist with addressing a variety of problem areas including anxiety, depression, self-esteem, anger management, academic difficulties, impulsivity/hyperactivity, symptoms related to trauma history or exposure, relationship concerns, family conflicts, life transitions, and daily stressors. In collaboration with the client and their families, I gather information and assist with developing targeted treatment plans to help clients work toward their goals and improve their overall well-being. Creating a safe and comfortable environment for my clients is what I strive for so clients can feel they can be free with their thoughts and feelings without the fear of being judged. I utilize interventions from models such as Client-Centered Therapy, CBT, DBT, Play Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy as counseling progresses and needs are identified. While there are many important factors involved in the counseling process, I believe that one of the most critical aspects of therapy is a strong therapeutic relationship. I utilize my ability to empathize and connect with clients of all ages and backgrounds to develop those strong therapeutic relationships with my clients.
